Rev. Donald C. Humphrey, CH COL USAR (Ret.), 95, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025 in
Weslaco, TX. Donald was born in
Hodgenville, KY on April 3, 1930 to Everett Humphrey and Lena Spratt Humphrey. He always joked that as a child he sat on Abraham Lincoln's lap. Lincoln, too, was born in Hodgenville and Don would climb up onto the Lincoln statue in the town square and snooze in his lap. He married the love of his life, Patricia Lee Bell, on August 5, 1955.
Donald's academic journey was as remarkable as his professional one. He graduated from Georgetown College in
Georgetown, KY, where he laid the foundation for his life's work as a minister. His pursuit of knowledge and spiritual growth led him to The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in
Louisville, KY, further preparing him for a life of service. His thirst for education did not stop there; he went on to earn a Master's degree from Long Island University in New York, equipping him with a diverse and rich perspective that he carried into all his endeavors.
His military career was marked by bravery and distinction. Serving as a Chaplain in the United States Army for 24 years, Donald retired as a Colonel, an achievement reflecting his leadership and dedication. Before serving in the Army, he spent 9 years serving in the United States Navy. Donald was a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam, honors that speak volumes of his valor and sacrifice.
Donald's calling as a Baptist minister was a journey of faith that spanned an incredible 62 years. Throughout southern Indiana and Kentucky, he served in 22 churches, touching countless lives with his sermons, compassion, and unwavering faith. His guidance and wisdom were a beacon of light for many, and his impact as a spiritual leader left an indelible mark on the communities he served.
An adventurer at heart, Donald's interests took him far and wide. His passion for travel saw him explore all 50 states and 40 countries, each journey enriching his understanding and appreciation of the world. This love for exploration was not just physical but intellectual, as he channeled his experiences into the written word, selfpublishing two books that shared his insights and adventures.
