With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Chad Vandette, a proud Army veteran, a devoted friend and family member, and a man whose generosity, kindness, and humor touched countless lives. Chad passed away on March 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and unwavering strength.
Born on September 17, 1981, Chad dedicated his life to both his country and his community. As a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, he served with honor, embodying the values of dedication, leadership, and selflessness. He was always willing to help others, whether through his military service, his close-knit AA family-where he encouraged and supported many on their journey to sobriety-or simply by lending a hand to those in need. He was immensely proud of his 18 years of sobriety and the relationships he built within the recovery community.
Chad found joy in life's many adventures. He had a deep passion for golf, gaming, bowling, fishing, and kayaking, always welcoming friends and family to join in the fun. A true historian at heart, he was particularly fascinated by World War II, amassing an impressive collection of WWII helmets and uniforms. His creativity and attention to detail shone through when he meticulously crafted a Ghostbusters uniform to perfectly match the one from the movie.
Among his fondest memories were his near-annual trips to Mackinac Island with his parents, a tradition that brought him peace and happiness. He was also a devoted uncle who treasured time with his nieces, even treating his family to a special trip to Disneyland to create memories they would cherish forever. His generosity knew no bounds.
Chad's warmth and positivity were contagious. He was funny, stubborn, strong, and kind-always the one to brighten a room with his smile, no matter what challenges he faced. He was a great communicator, a loyal friend, and a man who truly valued and prioritized his relationships.
Chad is survived by his loving parents, Steven and Barbara Vandette; his sister, Heather (Mike) Castro; and his beloved nieces, Kennedy and Sadie Castro. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Joan (Del) Goolsby, Michael (Sue) Grabowski, Chris Schumacher, and Nikki Vandette, along with many cousins, extended family members, dear friends, and his AA family.
Chad's life will be honored with visitation at O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a scripture service and sharing of memories beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Novi, with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:30 a.m. He will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
Donations in Chad's memory may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, a cause that was close to his heart.
Though he is no longer with us, Chad's spirit will live on in the many lives he touched. His kindness, laughter, and unwavering support will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Rest in peace, Chad. Your legacy of love and service will endure forever.
