Chance Joseph Watler Obituary

Age 12, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2025. He was born on December 18. 2012, to Shavon Watler and Andrew Dunbar. Although short-lived, Chance's life was filled with an abundance of love. He was affectionately known as Puff and Chance The Man.
From kindergarten to 6th grade, Chance attended Resurrection of Our Lord School. During his 6th grade year, he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma and, because of the illness and treatment, had to start receiving and completing his lessons at home. In spite of his physical ailments, Chance was determined to work hard to successfully complete his assignments and, also, his treatment. On March 12, 2025, he bravely and excitedly "rang the bell," completing his cancer treatment.
He began to live as a normal, healthy 12-year-old boy. He was enrolled in a new school, St. John Lutheran, as an in-class student. Chance had such a bright and shining personality, he quickly met quite a few new friends. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his cousins and his absolute best friend and Shero, his mama. He never allowed cancer to defeat him! Amongst his favorite hobbies, he enjoyed dressing, displaying his intelligence through conversation and traveling.
Sadly and unexpectedly, on August 13, 2025, Chance went in for a routine 5-month scan and it showed that the cancer had returned, and it was aggressive. This time, Chance's system could not fight the disease as it had spread wildly and rapidly. He fought every day to keep going and be the shining star in his mom and dad's lives but his body had grown too weak to be as strong as he so desperately wanted to be. At 4:11 AM, September 30th, his great aunt notified his mom that he was unresponsive. She crawled into his bed and cradled her baby for the last time.
Chance leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Shavon Watler; his father, Andrew "Buthie" Dunbar; grandmother, Stacy Watler; grandfather, Byron Thomas; brother, Emory "Mann" Williams; sister, A'Lo Dunbar; stepmother, Candace Gabriel; aunts, Breion Watler; uncle, Gilbert Watler, cousins, Lebron and Janays Watler, Maliya Brown, Joeal and Breal Brastfield, Landon and Tarik Bridges and Reshad Lewis; great aunts, Francis (Luther) Bridges, Brigena Jones, Ronisha Baptiste and Rhonda Johnson; great uncles, Devin Porter, Eddie Scales and Ronald Jones.
Chance was preceded in death by his great grandmother, Gloria Watler and aunt, Gloria Cole.
Relatives and friends of the family are all invited to a attend his Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, October 11, 2025, 10:00AM, at New Home Ministries, 1616 Carondelet St, New Orleans, LA 70130. Visitation will be held from 8:00AM until the hour of service. Internment Providence Memorial Park, Metairie, LA.
