Charleen Waxler Ashby, 94, of Abilene, passed away on August 30, 2025 in Abilene.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 8, 2025, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 8, 2025, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, with Rev. John Fanning and Wade Ashby officiating. Burial will follow in the Drummond Cemetery.

Charleen was born in Seguin, Texas to Lonie Amelia (Levrets) and Diedrich D. Waxler on July 28, 1931. She graduated from Abilene High School in 1950 and attended Beauty School after graduation. Charleen married James William Ashby on January 19, 1952 in Abilene, Texas. They were married 63 years. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a member of View Baptist Church. Charleen was a wonderful Christian wife and mother. She also had a Christian influence on the children she taught in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.

Shortly after Charleen and James married, she joined him in Fountainebleu, France where he served in the military. After returning from France, they made their home in the View-Caps area where they had both spent their childhood. Charleen was known for her cooking and won many blue ribbons for her pecan desserts at the West Texas Fair. Her gift of cooking was enjoyed by many of the neighbors when she heard of someone ill, injured or who lost a loved one.

Charleen was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Dickie Ray Waxler, her sister, Leona Davis, and a great-granddaughter, Wynrie McClendon.

She is survived by her son, Mac Ashby and wife Barbara of Snyder; daughters, Cova Perrien and husband Scott of Elwell, Michigan, Sheryl McClendon and husband Roy of Abilene, Carla Meadows and husband James of Merkel; Twelve grandchildren and Twenty three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by close special friends Nora Tinney, Janice Richards, Malcolm Loving, Steve Chapman and Carol Rouse.

A special thank you to Dr. Hudman, staff at Wesley Court and the Alpha and Omega Hospice care team, Renaye, Kiana and Amber, for the care and support they provided.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the West Texas Rehab Center or View Baptist Church.
