Charles Finley Adams, Jr., age 79, died surrounded by family on July 24, two days after his fifty-seventh wedding anniversary.
Chuck led a life filled with learning, love and adventure that took he and his wife Connie to living part of the year in Hout Bay, South Africa, for ten years. Cherished friendships were made throughout Chuck's life from growing up in Weymouth, Massachusetts, to summers on Cape Cod, to the family's time in Clintonville, to the friends at Pleasant Hill Lake, to the Big Eats Hiking Club in South Africa. Chuck loved being a dad to Cay and Will and took time to get to know his kids' friends. As a grandpa, Chuck wanted to be the grandparent with the best toys, which grew to include a full size tractor, a golf cart, a working small cannon, a bb gun and a potato cannon of dubious safety.
A graduate of Hobart and William Smith College and Northeastern University, Chuck earned a PhD in economics from SUNY Albany. Chuck started his career as a recipient of a Bookings Institution Fellowship and went on to retire as professor emeritus after 26 years from The Ohio State University. A patient and exacting professor in the graduate program of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs, Chuck's interest in local finance led to his work in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union and South Africa at the end of Apartheid where he supported the work of local communities in building fledgling democracies.
Chuck is survived by his wife Connie; his daughter Cay and her family (Joe, Finley, Mahala); son Will and his family (Becky, Benjamin, Betty); and beloved nephews Mike and Dave Leahy.
He is preceded in death by his parents Charles Finley Adams and Elizabeth (Bate) Adams and sister Pat Adams.
The family gives a special note of gratitude to the caring team at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Center in Ashland.
A celebration of life will be held at the OSU Faculty Club on Sunday, September 22 at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to an organization Chuck liked to support, SmileTrain at https://support.smiletrain.org
