Charles Allgood Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 28, 2025.
Allgood, Charles Young Charles Young Allgood, a career banker, community leader, tennis champion, devoted friend, and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, died Wednesday, August 27, 2025, following a lengthy illness.

A native of Rockmart, Georgia, Charles was educated in the public schools and earned a bachelor of business administration degree from Emory University. He returned to Rockmart to teach high school math for two and a half years before launching his career in banking.

Charles and wife, Laura, brought their young family to Dalton where he worked for Hardwick Bank and First National Bank of Dalton before returning to Rockmart to serve as president of The Rockmart Bank. Seven years later, the family returned to Dalton where Charles served as president of the Bank of Dalton, then Dalton-Whitfield Bank & Trust and finally Alliance National Bank from which Charles retired in 2008.

Concurrent with his banking career, Charles served in many community leadership positions, including president of the Dalton-Whitfield Chamber of Commerce, campaign chair of the United Way of Northwest Georgia, president of the Dalton Rotary Club, trustee of the Whitfield Healthcare Foundation, and president of the John W. Looper Speech and Hearing Clinic.

It was during his term as president that the Chamber of Commerce launched its popular Leadership Dalton-Whitfield program and its Education is Essential initiative to boost local high school graduation rates. It was also under his leadership that Dalton established a sister-city relationship with Dilbeek, Belgium.

He and Laura served as PTA co-chairs, and Charles once won the City-County Tennis Tournament with doubles partner, Dalton tennis legend, Fred Chen. Charles maintained his contribution to the team's success was "staying out of Fred's way."

He is predeceased by his parents, Henry Morenus Allgood and Anne Elizabeth Allgood, as well as sister Joanne Allgood Fuller and his brother-in-law, Charles Homer Fuller. He is survived by Laura, his wife of 64 years; son, Bryan Lee (Kelly) Allgood; daughter, Elizabeth Sloan Allgood (Curt) Scarborough; grandchildren, Conner (Carlee) Scarborough; Macy Scarborough (Ethan) Critcher; Cole Scarborough; Grant Allgood; William Thurston; and Mary Kathryn Thurston; and great-grandchildren, Hadley Layne Critcher, Josie Brooks Critcher, and Cassie Young Critcher; nephew James Clay (Samantha) Fuller and great-nephews William and Jack Fuller, and great-niece Josie Fuller.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church of Dalton. Reverend Nicole Jiskoot will officiate.

Visitation will be from noon until the service begins at 2 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 489, Dalton, GA 30722

The family would like to thank Community Hospice and Walnut Creek Personal Care Home for their amazing teams, deep dedication, and truly compassionate care.
