While working at Goodyear, they moved from Topeka to a rural area east of Eskridge. In his later years, a decision was made to move back to Topeka. Charles was a member of South Knollwood Baptist Church in Topeka, where he served as door greeter for many years. He had a habit of reading a chapter of Proverbs daily in addition to his regular Bible reading. After his retirement, he enjoyed raising goats and loved watching the playful antics of the kid goats. He also enjoyed gardening, especially flower gardening and continued this even when he lived in their Topeka apartment.
