Charles Derrick Charles, lovingly known as "Charlie" was born May 24, 1958, to Luther and Helen Morrell Charles. Charlie spent his early years working with his dad and brother Danny farming. Raised and educated in Columbia County, where he would call home all of his life. A Columbia High Class of 1976 Graduate and proud Tiger Football player. After graduating from high school Charlie went to work for his dad at Lake City Wilbert Vault Company, which was founded in 1973, Providing burial vault services to funeral homes throughout North Florida. In 1980 he purchased the business from Luther and would go on to build a successful monument division known as Charles Custom Memorials. Charlie was a successful businessman, known for Honesty, Integrity, Quality and treating everyone as he would want to be treated. Charlie was an active member of the Elks Lodge in Lake City, Ducks Unlimited, and served as Past President and a Member of the Florida Monument Builders Association. He was also a member of the Monument Builders of North America.
Charlie had a passion for life, whether it be traveling, hunting, fishing, fast cars or pyrotechnics, he enjoyed excitement. He was a wonderful provider, mentor and protector for his children Pam and Chris. He dearly loved his wife of nearly 30 years Janice Tompkins Charles. They were fortunate enough to build a great life together, travel and make many wonderful memories. He especially enjoyed their life and times at the river with friends and family.
Charlie is survived by his loving wife: Janice Tompkins Charles of Lake City, FL; his daughter, Pam Charles Williams (Brian Barrs) of Lake City, FL; his son, Chris Charles and his wife Heather of Lake City, FL; his brother, Luther Daniel 'Dan' Charles and his wife Merri McNomer of Harriman, TN; and his cherished grandchildren, Austin Williams and Haidyn Markham. He is also survived by his special companion Millie, the dog
Visitation will be held at Daniels Funeral Home in Live Oak from 5:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 1st. A celebration of life service will be held graveside at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 2nd in Wellborn Cemetery, with Mr. Jeffro Thomas officiating.
