Charles Frederick “Fred” Chewning Jr., of Jacksonville, FL, passed away on his 68th birthday, July 26, 2025. Born on July 26, 1957, Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend whose love for family and passion for life will be remembered by all who knew him.
Fred, also affectionately known as Freddie, was a lifelong Floridian with a personality that was as big as the outdoors. He was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life — whether it was cheering on the Florida Gators, pickin’ his guitar while playing bluegrass and Christian music, or spending a quiet afternoon fishin’ on the river.
Fred’s love for his family was unwavering. He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Angela Faye Chewning; his children Kim Chewning, Charlene Chewning, Becky Chewning (spouse Curt Smith), and William Chewning; and his many grandchildren, who brought their Pappy immeasurable joy: Michael Cenci, Bre'Anna Smith, Eddie Cenci, MaKayla Smith, Nathan Kauffman, Dalton Smith, Rori Smith, Zoey Guest, Chloe Smith, Lilian Chewning, Gabrielle Stapleton, William (Hootie) Chewning, DJ Stapleton, Jack Smith, Lainey Smith, and his great-grandchild, Ozyah Smith.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Fred Chewning and Connie Chewning, who he deeply loved and missed.
Fred’s legacy will live on through the many memories created, the songs played, and the quiet moments shared with his loved ones. His laughter, wisdom, sarcasm, and commitment to those he loved will continue to be felt in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Naugle Funeral Home, located at 1203 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
A reception will follow at the Henry T. Jones Community Center, located at 3856 Grant Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
