Dr. Charles Thomas Covington, MD was born October 17, 1938, to Alex and Lessie (Brunt) Covington in Pampa, Texas. The family moved to Fairfax, OK in 1953, and Tom graduated from Fairfax HS in 1957. He attended Park College in Missouri his freshman year, transferring to the University of Hawaii for his sophomore year. He finished his final two years at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. Tom attended medical school at the Los Angeles California College of Medicine from 1961 - 1965. Following graduation from medical school, he enlisted in the US Navy, spending six months in submarine school. He was then assigned to the submarine Benjamin Franklin, where he served his internship and was honorably discharged in 1969.
After the Navy, Tom returned to Fairfax where he practiced medicine for two years, before moving to Stillwater where he continued his practice for the next 18 years. Tom and Edwina Harrison were united in marriage in March of 1972. After her death, Tom was offered a position with Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1995, he returned to Oklahoma to be closer to his family. Tom was working at the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, near the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building when it was bombed. He was among the first responders who aided the injured. Tom finished his career with the Dept. of Corrections, retiring in 2004, then moving back to Fairfax to care for his mother. He passed from this life on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Claremore Veterans Center, where he had resided for the past four years. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and wife Edwina. He leaves behind his sister Barbara Prater and husband Pat, as well as several nieces and nephews.
