Charles Dykes Obituary

Charles Major Dykes, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully at age 84 on September 30, 2025, surrounded by family.

Charles was born on April 21, 1941, in Lyons, Georgia, to Jule and Jeanette Dykes and grew up in Coastal Georgia. He met his sweetheart and future wife, Glenda, while attending Southern Technical Institute, and they were married on October 1, 1961. Together they were blessed with two sons, Chad and Derek.

Growing up in a family involved in the grocery business, Charles learned the value of hard work. That work ethic remained with him throughout his career. After earning a degree in engineering, Charles subsequently founded his own mechanical contracting business. After many successful years and wonderful associates, he was able to pass the business on to his sons.

Charles had many interests and hobbies. He participated in most sports in high school and especially loved playing quarterback for the Camden County Hurricanes. A love of snow skiing led Charles on many happy and memorable trips with family and friends to countless beautiful locations. His fondness for fishing resulted in many tournament entries; he never caught the largest fish, but his happiness meter was off the charts. He also loved watching his sons participate in sports from little league to high school and never missed a game. He and Glenda shared a love of travel, which he carried to his final days.

By far, Charles's favorite hobby was golf. His passion for the sport began at a young age, and he was dedicated to improving his game, at which he became quite proficient. He cherished his golfing groups at the Atlanta Athletic Club and made many wonderful and valued friends there over the years.

Having a strong faith, Charles was always involved in church activities and leadership and served the community through various civic organizations.

Charles is survived by his wife of 64 years, Glenda, his children, Chad and Tammy Dykes, Derek and Mitzi Dykes, his four grandchildren Amanda Dykes, Drew Dykes (Alec), Macy Dykes, Prentiss Dykes, and his great-grandson Dylan Arthur. Charles is also survived by his sister, Faye Hollington, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Winfred "Buddy" Dykes.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Perimeter Church Chapel in Johns Creek, Georgia. Memorial donations may be made to Fragile First Foundation, LLC, at www.capstonehospice.com/fragile-first-foundation.
