June 3, 1939 - March 31, 2025
DANIEL ISLAND, SC/MEXICO, NY - Charles Feeney, 85, longtime resident of Mexico, NY, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025 at Wellmore of Daniel Island, SC.
He was born in Mexico, NY, June 3, 1939, to the late James C. and Dena (Giovo) Feeney. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Lou (Sachel) and his brother, Patrick Feeney.
He was a graduate of Mexico Academy and Central Schools. He was a member of the 1954-1955 basketball team, winners of the Oswego County championship. He also attended Hartwick College and Bryant & Stratford Business School.
After school, he started his career at Grandma Brown's Beans, before becoming a partner in Da Mar Dairy with Robert Cowles. During many holiday seasons, he produced and packaged Old Charlie's Homemade Peanut Brittle with his brother-in-law, the late Jim Sachel, using a recipe handed down through generations of Giovos.
He began working in insurance in Mexico, NY then went on to work with Fitzgibbons & Sindoni in Oswego, NY. He worked and became a partner with the firm. In 1986, a group of 3 independent agencies agreed to merge to form Eastern Shore Associates, of which he became Chairman of the Board. His partners included Carl Walrath, Sam Sindoni, and Richard (Dick) McKean. By the time he retired, it had grown to 10 locations and 75 full time employees.
He was active in the Mexico community. He was co-founder of the North Jefferson Street Athletic Club. He served as Town of Mexico Republican Party Chairman for over 20 years. He also was a member of the local Key Bank Advisory board, the Lion's Club, Knights of Columbus, Village of Mexico Advisors Board, Operation Oswego County, and the Heritage Campaign St. Mary's – Mexico. He was a lifetime fan of sports, including the University of Notre Dame, the NY Yankees, and the Green Bay Packers, of which he was a proud stockholder. He was a lifelong Catholic and a generous supporter of many organizations, including Carolina Cockers.
He is survived by his son, Brian Feeney (Mary Jane Thomson) of Hanahan, SC; sisters Dena C. (Katie) Feeney of Washington, DC and Mary Jo Jackson (Dr. Ronald Jackson) of Rectortown, VA; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He will be remembered for his generosity, conviviality, and love of Central NY.
Per his request, there will be no funeral services. Arrangements are in care of Harter Funeral Home, Inc. Mexico, NY.
