Charles Ray "Charlie" Franklin, age 72, of the Blue Rock Community, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 5th, at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Jackson County, he was a son of the late James Thomas and Pauline Williamson Franklin. He was preceded in death as well by two brothers: James Ray Franklin who was an infant, and Cecil Ray Franklin.

Charlie earned a degree in law enforcement and proudly served as a North Carolina State Trooper for a number of years, known everywhere for being fair and respectful to everyone he encountered on the road – a true example of professionalism and compassion in uniform. After his time with the patrol, he went on to work for French Broad Electric for a number of years.

Charlie lived a life full of passion, kindness and integrity. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, horseback riding, and attending horse shows, where his gentle spirit and easy smile made him friends everywhere he went. He also had a passion for drag racing and the thrill of the track, always finding joy in the roar of the engines and the camaraderie of fellow racers. Charlie was one of those rare people who never met a stranger – the kind of man who made an impression on everyone he met, whether at a horse show, a race, or just out and about. He was known as "the man who could talk to a wall and it would talk back".

Left to cherish Charlie's memory are his loving wife of 36 years, Lisa Byrd Franklin, who remained by his side through every season of his life; their beloved son, Clint Franklin and wife, Tonya; his two grandchildren who brought him endless joy, Christopher and Lily Franklin; and a dear, special friend, Kenneth Winters. He is also survived by other extended family and too many friends to count.

His kindness, humor, and down-to-earth nature will be deeply missed by all who were ever lucky enough to know him.

A private graveside service will take place at a later date.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation for the wonderful care given to Charlie.
