On March 17, 2025, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) identified the remains of Capt. Charles Graham Gibson Jr., missing from World War II. Gibson entered the U.S. Army from Texas and was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 48th Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Infantry Division. On Dec. 11, 1950, while a member of a forward observer party, Gibson went missing 10 miles north of Hagaru-ri, a village U.S. troops withdrew during the conflict in northeast North Korea which came to be known as the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. Gibson was reported missing in action at the time and absent evidence of his continued survival, the U.S. Army issued a presumptive finding of death of Dec. 31, 1953. In July 2018, North Korea turned over 55 boxes of remains to the United States, purported to contain the remains of U.S. service members killed during the Korean War. The remains arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii on Aug. 1, 2018, and were subsequently accessioned into the DPAA laboratory for identification. The laboratory analysis and the totality of the circumstantial evidence available established an association between one set of these remains and Gibson.

Gibson is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, which was updated in 2022 to include the names of the fallen.
