Charles Grant Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 18, 2026.
Charles Hope Grant aka "Uncle Carly" or "Uncle" of Hartford and Bloomfield, CT transitioned peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Charles was born to the late Vincent Grant and Doris Sutherland on March 20, 1935, in Kingston, Jamaica and attended St. Francis Primary School (Nun-Spend). It was called this due to the school being operated by the Franciscan sisters or nuns. He was the sixth child of ten for Doris, and the second for Vincent. Most of his childhood was spent in Harker's Hall, St. Andrew, Jamaica where on market days, he was taken out of school to assist his mother to take her goods to the market.

Charles started working at age sixteen (16) with the Ministry of Agriculture in Jamaica as a horticulturist where he was based at the Hope Botanical Gardens. He went on to have four children before eventually meeting his wife, Daphne Grant who had six children from a previous relationship. They were married in April 1974 and Daphne predeceased him in 2022. While working at Hope Gardens, he got the opportunity to go on the farm work program three times. He worked with the Ministry for many years until the workers were made redundant.

In 1988, he migrated to the United States of America with his wife, Daphne where he worked as a security guard at The Hartford before retiring. Charles was a dedicated member of Asylum Avenue Baptist Church in Hartford where he got baptized. One of his greatest pleasures was serving in the soup kitchen at the church every Saturday morning. In September 2017 he was ordained as a Deacon. After moving from Hartford to Bloomfield, he eventually became a member of Pilgrim Way Baptist Church in Windsor where he remained until his death.

Charles leaves to mourn his sister, Carmen Rose Blake in England; four children: Corine (June), Sadie (husband Steve), Charles(Junior) his wife, Althea and Marva; seven grandchildren: Shereece (husband Rayon), Timar, Shane, Anjali, Kymona, Gavin and Christopher; one great grandchild, Reina; four stepchildren and their children, caregivers, Carol and Michael, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

We will reminisce about Charles Hope Grant's caring and jovial nature, his love for family and his mischievous nature with a twinkle in his eyes.

Psalm 147:3 "He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds"
