Charles Ralph Harpster, age 77, born in Mansfield, Ohio, passed away on January 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with Diffuse B Cell Lymphoma. Born on June 5, 1947, he was the son of the late Ralph Eugene and Evelyn June (Hall) Harpster. Charlie is survived by his devoted wife, Jo Ann (Pickens) Harpster; his son, Steve Harpster, and his wife, Karen; his daughter, Elizabeth Harpster; and his beloved grandchildren, Tyler (15) and Cooper (11).
Charlie graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1965. He received Bachelor of Arts degrees in history and government education from Capital University in 1969 and a master's in history and a minor in Secondary Education from the University of Arizona in 1972.
Charlie was a proud veteran who dedicated significant years of his life to serving his country. He enlisted in the Air Force in September 1967, and from 1970 to 1974, he served as an Air Force Titan II Missile Commander with the 390th Strategic Missile Wing at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. His role was critical during the Vietnam War era, and he was promoted to the rank of Captain due to his leadership and dedication. Charlie's service was marked by numerous decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (AFOUA). He often spoke with pride about his responsibilities overseeing powerful missile systems, knowing he played a vital role in America's national security during a tense historical period. After his Honorable Discharge on June 5, 1974, in Tucson, Arizona, Charlie carried the values of discipline and commitment instilled in him by his military experience. His time in the Air Force shaped not only his character but also his approach to life and service to others.
Charlie was not just an educator; he was a cherished mentor who left a lasting impact on countless lives. With over 20 years of dedicated teaching at Westerville South High School, he became a beloved figure in the community. His passion for coaching football spanned several years, beginning at Westerville South from 1980 to 1984 and later at Reynoldsburg High School from 1987 to 1996. Even after retiring from teaching in 1999, his influence continued to resonate. Beyond the classroom, Charlie was a licensed independent insurance agent for 40 years, showcasing his versatility and commitment to serving others. He also shared his expertise as an adjunct professor at respected institutions such as Ohio Dominican University, Capital University, and Wilmington College. His dedication to education extended to supporting first-year teachers, where he thrived in guiding new educators. From 2002 to 2019, Charlie served as a consultant for the Ohio Department of Education, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to improving educational practices. Additionally, he was Regional Coordinator for Entry Year teachers from 2002 to 2009, further amplifying his impact on the teaching community. Charlie's legacy is one of inspiration and dedication, reflecting his profound belief in the power of education and mentorship. He will always be remembered for his kindness, guidance, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable career.
A memorial gathering will be held to celebrate Charles' life and honor his memory on January 7, 2025, from 5 to 7:00pm at the Cotner Funeral Home, 7369 E. Main St.
