MITCHELL – Charles Wayne Higgs, 81, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2025, at his residence.
Born September 22, 1943 in Mitchell, he was the son of Edward Jackson and Nola Blanche (Skaggs) Higgs. He met Iva Helen Harris on the dance floor, and they had been together ever since. They married on April 8, 1996.
Charlie retired after 23 years from NSWC – Crane and was a truck driver after retirement. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. Charlie was a member of the American Legion Post 250 and was active with the honor guard. He had previously been a member of VFW Post 9107. Charlie loved woodworking and built cradles for family members. He was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting and fishing. His favorite thing to do was spend time with his grandkids.
Surviving are his wife, Iva Higgs of Mitchell; children, Keegan (Tessa) Higgs of Paoli, Brady (Emily) Johnston of Anderson, Alexis (Kyle) Wethington of Anderson, James Martin of Anderson, Alicia Riddle of Noblesville, and Alisa Martin of Sulphur Springs; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
His parents and siblings, Anna Louise Grissom Higgs, Vanda Cooper, Jack Higgs, and Alvin Higgs, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 7, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Jimmy Johnson officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
