A memorial service for Mr. Charles Hughes, 82 of Carthage, Texas will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 3:00 pm at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. A time of visitation will be held from 2:00-3:00 prior to the service.
Mr. Charles Edward Hughes was born to the marriage of Edward Marshall "E.M." Hughes and Nova Ruth Gunter on December 17, 1941, in Houston, Texas. He passed from this life on Thursday morning, February 8, 2024, in Longview.
He married Joyce Durham on September 1, 1963, and they celebrated over 60 years of marriage. He graduated from Sam Houston High School in Houston in 1959. He attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos on a journalism scholarship and served as editor of the newspaper and yearbook. After earning his BA from SWTS, he completed his MA in English at Stephen F. Austin State University. Charles began his career in education as a teacher at Pasadena High School.
In 1969, Joyce and he moved to Carthage when he took a job teaching English and journalism at Panola Junior College. Throughout his years as an educator, Charles inspired students with his love of English, literature, and journalism. During the latter years of his career, he served Panola College as Academic Dean and as its Vice President. Charles has been a member of Rotary Club, St. John's Episcopal Church, and Trinity Baptist Church.
He loved working with his hands. At all times he kept a project going, whether it was remodeling a house, refinishing a piece of furniture, or building something new. He loved to read, to write, and tell great stories. In his final years, his yard and garden became his passion. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Michael Dan Hughes; brother-in-law, Will H. Bondurant; daughter-in-law, Janet Hughes. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Hughes; daughter, Claire Windham and husband Micah; son, Edward Hughes; grandchildren, Tori Windham, Wyatt Windham and wife Ciara, Sam Windham, and Molly Windham; his siblings, Mary Hughes Bondurant, and sister-in-law, Theresa Hughes.
The family suggest memorial donations can be made to the Charles E. Hughes Scholarship at Panola College
