Charles Dwayne Hutchings Charles Dwayne Hutchings was born on June 30, 1953, to Ethelene and Cornelius Hutchings. He attended Edison Elementary, Houston Junior High, and Hobbs High School, where he excelled both in the classroom and on the field. An exceptional athlete, Charles lettered in football and basketball, earning state championships in both sports. He truly embodied what it meant to be a Hobbs Eagle — dedicated, determined, and full of heart. After high school, Charles attended South Plains Junior College in Levelland, Texas, before transferring to Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business.
The love of his life was Miss Patricia Hayter. The two married and built a beautiful life together, raising two sons — Patrick Dwayne Hutchings, born May 28, 1971, and Charles Dwayne Hutchings Jr. (“CJ”), born December 2, 1972. Charles began his career with Monsanto Oil Company in Midland, Texas, before transferring to Southern Union Refining Company in Hobbs, New Mexico. When Southern Union eventually closed, he began his lifelong career at Navajo Refining Company in Artesia, New Mexico. Charles retired from Navajo Refining in 2012, / and proudly took on his favorite role yet — Patricia’s devoted “house husband,” making sure she was pampered and cared for each and every day.
Charles is survived by his wife, Patricia Hutchings, of the home; brother, Greg Hutchings (Beverly); sister, Connie Hutchings; granddaughter, Aislinn Kianna Hutchings; great-granddaughter, Alayah Andrea Hutchings Love; mother-in-law, Georgia VanZant, uncle Edward Ford (Frankie); sister-in-laws Delores Ford, Georgia Tate, Jimmi Baker, Loretta Hayter, Linda Hayter, Phyllis Hayter, Billie Gene Hayter; brother-in-laws Kenneth Williams, and Keith Hayter.
Charles was preceded in death by his beloved sons, Patrick and C.J. Hutchings; granddaughter, Breyana Hutchings; parents, Ethelene and Cornelius Hutchings; and brothers, Roy Lee Ford and Cornelius Hutchings Jr. Charles was a dedicated husband, father, and friend whose kindness, work ethic, and love for his family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
A Visitation for Charles will take place Thursday, November 6, 2025, from 1:00 to 6:00 pm at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at Jefferson Street Church of Christ Friday, November 7, 2025, at 11:00 am with the Burial following at Prairie Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.
