I, too, would like to note how Charles' commentary on all things made a difference to me who listened to every word he uttered on Fox. In fact, he made Fox News. I started watching it because I discovered his segments. The world has lost a great speaker and great intellect I do miss him on our TV. r.i.p.

I guess I connected with Charles because I shared many things in common with him. A similar age, Jewish, East Coast, love of chess, baseball, politics, history, things intellectual, and family (not in that order). He was my favorite of all political commentators. When i saw him or heard his voice i would stop and listen to what he had to say. His personal story of his life is an amazing journey of how he became who he was. Politics are very emotionally charged in this current day. To the point of discouragement of anything ever getting accomplished. Yet, Charles somehow made it seem like there was hope even when he didn't agree with the majority or popular vote. I will miss him and his humor. I hope his family and loved ones know how many peoples lives he had an impact on. Thank you and know that you were one of a kind Dr. Charles Krauthammer.

for ten years i often disagreed w/charles from my living room, but because he spoke so beautifully -- weaving a way to revealing his rationale through the most well-put, often humorous and never acrimonious explanations, i grew fond of him in a way a daughter adores her father.
there was a sweetness to charles. he was brilliant and sweet. how did he do that?
i will always think of charles for his life was grace personified. he has given us wisdom abundant about the smallest of things to the things that really do matter.

what really hurts the most is that charles' mind was at full capacity. it doesn't sit well that something could take him out with such aggression and that he might have suffered in his last year. how does one get angry at a cancer?
in moments of frustration or anger, i've trained myself to think about certain things, i.e., songs, scenery, etc., that pull me up and out of that chaos because to get caught up in it -- that too, is cancer. sometimes it's a charles krauthammer perfectly-timed response with the added bonus of a cheshire smile. perhaps, being jewish myself, one of charles' theological offerings of what he believes to be absolutely NOT true -- he gets to his answer through deduction:
"My theology can be summed up as, the only theology I know is not true, the only one I'm sure is untrue is atheism. Everything else I'm unsure about. I have this sense that there is transcendence in the universe, but we are in no position ever to understand it. I have an enormous attachment to the Jewish tradition and to the depth and the subtlety of its understanding of life, morality, and of metaphysics. I've always been interested in it, and that to me, I think, is important for Jews to try to continue that tradition, to make sure it lives, and to make sure that culture is nourished."

The other day I wrote, in memory of Charles (Charlie to us) on this site, that I first met him in 1958 when he entered our grade 3 class as an underaged 8 year old. However, I mistook the year: the grade was indeed grade 3, but the year was 1957, and Charlie was just 7, not 8, and a full year younger than the rest of us.
But what a seven year-old he was!
He was more fluent in French than our teacher, correcting her often. She used to call him 'the professor'!
He was also the best student in Hebrew, with his name, Yisroel, being oddly prophetic.
He loved Long Beach, idolized the Yankees, and absolutely revered his older bother 'Mossie'....
His energy, his exuberance, his passion... were already evident, and will be there forever....
To Charlie's family I say:
I sympathize deeply with you for your great loss and
"may The 'Ever-Present One' comfort you alongside the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem".
