January 28, 1946 – August 29, 2025Charles James Mathis was born on January 28, 1946 in Winter Garden, Florida, as the eldest child to Alf and Juanita Lillian Mathis. A cherished husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather, Charles was known for his passion for music, steadfast Christian faith, and unconditional love for his family. His life was a testament to kindness, dedication, and the joy he found in every note, every prayer, and every shared moment with those he held dear.Charles received his diploma from Eustis Vocational High School in Eustis, Florida. He continued his academic journey at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. During his college years, Charles was initiated into the Delta Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. A man of unwavering dedication, Charles devoted over 40 years of service as a Security Officer at Kennedy Space Center, where his reliability and integrity earned him the respect of all who worked alongside him. Prior to that milestone in his career, he spent 11 impactful years as the Band Director at Stone Middle School, where he inspired and mentored countless young musicians. His passion has always been centered around music. He found great joy in playing the piano and organ, especially during worship services at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a faithful and devoted member of the choir and congregation.A memorial service celebrating the life and legacy of Charles James Mathis will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, 3670 W. Railroad Ave, Cocoa, FL 32926. Family and friends are welcome to attend to honor his memory.Charles is survived by his loving wife, Rose M. Mathis, his daughter, Rita L. Scott, his grandson, Cameron T. Scott, his brother and sister in-law James and Bertha Montgomery, his brother and sister in-law Carl and Veronica Batton, his first cousin Edward and JoAnn Outlaw, and faithful long-term friends Jerome and Bertha Player, and god daughter, Ashley Player. He was preceded in death by his sister, Alnita L. Mathis, brothers Alfred Lee Mathis and Raymond Eugene Mathis, mother, Juanita Lillian Mathis, father, Alf Mathis and sister in-law, Eileen Montgomery.Charles James Mathis will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of faith, music, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of many.
