Charles Walter Moatz

Charles Walter Moatz, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, peacefully departed this world on October 29, 2025, in Fairborn, Ohio, at the remarkable age of 102. Born on June 22, 1923, in Portsmouth, Ohio, Charles lived a life rich in service, love, and family, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who knew him.

A World War II veteran, Charles served in the United States Navy, stationed in the Atlantic aboard the USS Gillete and later in the Pacific on the USS Panda. His military service instilled in him a sense of duty and commitment, characteristics that guided him throughout his life. He received several distinguished medals including the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal, reflecting his dedication and honor during a pivotal time in history.

After returning from his time in the Navy, Charles embarked on a fulfilling career as a line installer for Western Electric. In addition to this, he devoted 20 years to delivering phone books, making him the oldest carrier in the USA. For three decades, he also participated in census counts, showcasing his commitment to serving his community. His work was never just a job; it was an integral part of the tapestry woven throughout his life, marked by both challenge and achievement.

Charles was a man of deep faith, firmly rooted in his belief in God and Jesus. He was known for his friendly demeanor, social nature, and a heart filled with warmth and kindness. A devoted family man, he epitomized what it meant to be a "girl's Dad," creating innumerable cherished memories with his daughters, Teresa Wells Cynthia Sirko and Laura Hale. The time spent at amusement parks and traveling with his girls brought joy and laughter that resounded throughout their lives. His pride as a father extended further with the blessing of his grandchildren: Emily Brunt, Ryder Wells, Abigail Long, Justin Wells, Chad Hale, and Tara Hiller.

His love knew no bounds and continued to blossom with the addition of great-grandchildren Hallie, Ella, Levi, Will, Ranger, and Autumn, who all brought immeasurable joy to his life. The stories of baseball games, especially enjoying his beloved Cincinnati Reds, and the challenges of navigating the delivery routes of phone books were part of the rich tapestry of memories that will be treasured by his family for generations to come.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Freda, with whom he shared 64 beautiful years of marriage, as well as his daughter Laura Jayne Moatz-Hale, parents Charles and Brida Moatz, and sister Helen. Their spirits remain in the hearts of those he leaves behind, and his enduring legacy will continue to inspire.

The family invites friends and loved ones to honor Charles's memory during a visitation on November 7, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Newcomer Funeral Home, Beavercreek, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM, celebrating a life well-lived—a life filled with love, service, and unwavering faith. He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Valley View Memorial Gardens.
