I did not know Charlie had passed away. I had been following his posts about Montreat post-Helene, and then I didn't see any posts and I was concerned. I met Charlie in 1975 through the SCIONS Sunday School class at Peachtree, when he was class president. I will always remember our class trip to his family home, The Newell Post, on Graybeard Trail in Montreat on Mother's Day weekend, 1975. Charlie was a good friend. We last spoke on the phone about a year ago and corresponded on Facebook. Through the spiritual support of Charlie and other friends, I too went to Columbia Seminary and was ordained a Presbyterian minister. I will miss Charlie tremendously. My deepest sympathy to his family. I am so sad. We have lost a great man.

I got to know Charlie through my work at Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF). His steadfast support and kindness meant the world to us. We are so grateful to have gotten to know him, and we will miss the light he brought to the Atlanta legal community.

I got to know Charlie on a trip to Atlanta on behalf of Montreat Conference Center. He was my favorite type of donor, one who takes the lead in hosting me at a favorite restaurant and telling me how much this place means to him. He had such a caring demeanor and was truly interested in me and hearing my Montreat story too. Since then, we have connected both online and in person. His warm welcome was what I liked most about him. I think most people will miss that about Charlie, whether they got the stranger, acquaintance, or friend/family version of it. I miss you already, Charlie. Thinking of the whole family today as they mourn and celebrate him.
