Charles "Chuck" Oatman, age 58, of Southampton, N.J., passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Born in Mount Holly, Chuck spent nearly his entire life in Southampton, where he built deep roots in both his community and his family. Chuck began his career with the Mount Laurel Public Works Department before proudly serving as the Director of the Southampton Township Public Works Department, where he worked tirelessly for many years until his retirement in 2019. But long before his professional career began, Chuck found his true calling as a firefighter. He joined the fire service before his teenage years, beginning with the Ewansville Volunteer Fire Department. What started as a childhood passion became a lifelong devotion-spanning more than 40 years of service. Over those decades, he served with distinction in Mount Holly, Pemberton, Lumberton, and Southampton, and dedicated many years as an instructor at the Burlington County Fire Academy, training the next generation of firefighters. His commitment to protecting others, his bravery, and his willingness to answer the call defined his life's work. Chuck was a man who believed in showing up-for his family, his friends, and his community. He was always willing to lend a hand, offer support, or share his wisdom. His heart for service was matched only by his heart for those he loved. Outside of work and service, Chuck found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved hunting, fishing, and riding his Harley Davidson, but nothing brought him greater happiness than time spent with his family. His grandson, Jaxson, was the absolute light of his life, and the bond they shared was unbreakable. Chuck was predeceased by his father, Jack Oatman, who heroically died in the line of duty in 1997. He is survived by his devoted wife of more than 37 years, Lisa Oatman; his daughter, Corinne Phillips, and her husband, Andrew; his beloved grandson, Jaxson Phillips; and his mother, Betty Oatman. Family and friends are invited to gather in his honor on Saturday, September 20, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Perinchief Chapels, 438 High Street, Mount Holly, N.J. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Chuck's memory to the Fallen Firefighter's Association at www.firehero.org, honoring his lifelong dedication to service and sacrifice.
