Charles Sommers Otto. Born in St.Paul, the son of Elinor and Herman Otto. Educated at the Saint Paul Academy and the University of Pennsylvania, he received an MA in education at Harvard University that led him to a brief but impactful teaching position at Colorado Springs School. He then received his JD at Notre Dame University Law School, with a year spent in London. His career ranged from Minnesota to Boston to New York, where he brought his gift for genuine connection with others to the litigation support industry and developed a series of incredible friendships.
Charley was a lover of the arts and libraries, serving on the board of the Providence Public Library and Providence Athenaeum. At PPL, his affection for animals was highlighted when he rescued a cat from the library basement, one of many animal rescues in his lifetime. Among his most beloved Rhode Island arts organizations were Community Music Works, AS220, and Trinity Repertory Theater. He revered music and musicians, and he could always be counted on for recommendations of albums or live shows. He was above all cherished as a caring and generous friend, bringing loved ones across the country to tears of laughter with decades of raucous voicemails.
He is survived by his wife Carol Grant, son Will (Catherine Ferland) and daughter Molly. Also sisters Ginny Van Dyke and Ruth Otto, brother-in-law Michael Grant, sisters-in-law Susan Krumm and Mary Dalrymple and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and a grandnephew.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In his memory, help someone in tough times, play great music, consider supporting one of the organizations above.

We were honored to spend time with Charley, Carol, Will and Molly at the XZ Ranch in Montana. Usually Herb Ward and other St. Paul pals were involved too. Charley was funny, clever and fun to be around. He will be missed. We send love to Carol, Will and Molly.

Carole -

Our condolences for your great loss .... Charley Otto.

My memories ... Charley adored you - that was clear. He was revered by the litigation support industry. He was important to us and to our clients and to their success.

I saw Charley as the golden retriever of our industry. He was fun, witty, comfortable with himself, and always wanting to help others .. always using his humor. He blended his intellectual powers with his pragmatic instincts.

A great loss and a special memory. Charley Otto, we miss you.

So sad to hear the news of Charley's passing. Back in the mid-1980's, Charley helped engineer my departure from BigLaw (such as it was in those days) to the newly emerging world of "computer-assisted discovery" (as we called it then), and neither of us looked back. We got re-acquainted around 2012 when he had a brief stint at The Sedona Conference assisting us with the re-organization necessitated by Richard Braman's retirement. I remember Charley's infectious smile made even the most mundane or stressful tasks enjoyable. Rest in peace, Charley Otto.
