Charles "Chief" Pennington

Charles A. Pennington "Chief" With heavy hearts, the family announces the passing of Charles A. Pennington, lovingly known as Chief to many. He passed away peacefully on Thursday July 10, 2025 at the age of 56 at his residence in Romeoville, IL. He was born October 21, 1968 in Harlan Kentucky. Charles dedicated 20 years of his life to the Winfield Police Department, serving as a patrolman and detective. He was known for his calm demeanor under pressure and his unwavering commitment to protecting the citizens of the Village of Winfield. Charles was presented with the Life Saving Award as the first member of any public safety agency to arrive on scene at a structure fire. Placing himself at risk, he assisted in the rescue of an individual entangled in electrical cords in the structure fire and remained with the individual while summoning additional assistance. Outside of his work, Charles was an avid deer hunter. He spent countless hours in the woods, tracking game, experiencing the peace and serenity that only nature can provide, and enjoying the camaraderie of his friends and fellow hunters. Beyond the hunt, Charles enjoyed time outside as an opportunity for a time of reflection and connection to nature. He enjoyed camping and fishing and always tried to share these happy moments with friends and family. Charles was a devoted husband survived by his wife Robyn Hayes and a loving chosen father to sons Dylan & Eythan Pencakowski, daughters-in-law Hannah "Star" Hyams and Aviana Rivera, and proud grandfather of Charlotte Hayes. Charles is survived by his younger brother and sister-in-law William & Tiffany Watts, nephews William & Nicholas Watts, and nieces Trinity Watts and Tiffany & Allee Liddell. Charles was a proud member of the Pennington family tree. Charles was the final member to carry the Pennington name, but the roots of the Pennington family continue to live on through his many beloved cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents Charles L. and Mary Pennington, son Charles Pennington, and brother Lindbergh Pennington. Visitation will be held Friday from 3pm to 8pm at Anderson Memorial Chapel, 606 Townhall Drive, Romeoville, IL 60446. Funeral Saturday July 19, 2025, 10am at the funeral home chapel. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville.
