Charles Puhlmann, 84, Ashley, died at his farm NE of Ashley on Monday, May 6, 2024.
Charles Raymond Puhlmann, son of Leah (Nies) and Gustav Puhlmann, was born October 2, 1939 at Ashley. He was brought up at the Puhlmann farm 10 miles NE of Ashley. He attended country school and then helped his dad on the farm. Charles served his country in the United States Army, being inducted February 11, 1958. Following his honorable discharge on February 10, 1960, he worked as a truck driver out of St. Louis, MO. Charles married Ethel Boyer on April 21, 1962 at Centerville, IL. They settled in St. Louis. In 1969, after Charles's dad's death, the couple relocated to the Puhlmann farm where Charles lived the rest of his life. Over the years, he farmed, worked as a hay mover, and as a cattle mover. He never retired. He was a member of the Ashley Baptist Church and was a daily Bible reader. He served on the Dickey Rural Network Board; was a member and commander of the Ashley American Legion; belonged to a square dance club; was a member of Ashley Rodeo Club; was a member and president of the Ashley Jaycees; and was the Ashley Santa Claus for years. Charles mostly enjoyed working on the farm and his trucking business. He also liked visiting and talking on the phone.
Charles is survived by Ethel, his wife of 62 years; one son, Lawrence (Mary) Puhlmann of Ashley; and two sisters-Geraldine Keys and Phyllis Tinsley of San Antonio, TX.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gustav on February 14, 1969; his mother, Leah, on June 7, 2005; and three brothers-Ellis, Larry, and Walter.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Friday, May 10, 2024 at Carlsen-Lien Chapel, Ashley, led by Pastor Jason Haas. Recorded musical selections will be, "A Beautiful Life" and "Softly and Tenderly". Military rites will be provided by the Frank Piper American Legion Post #53, Ashley, ND. Interment will be Monday, May 13, 2024 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Carlsen-Lien Chapel with family present from 5:00-6:00 PM.
Casketbearers will be Kevin Nitschke, Shane Nitschke, Gary Schlabsz, and Randy Ulmer of Ashley; Joel Entzi of Fredonia; and Shawn Ritter of Venturia.

Uncle Charlie was a strong influence in my life. He was one tough cowboy. He always made me feel good and proud to be a Puhlmann. He was always visiting family and I loved to hear him laugh. I am deeply saddened by his passing. I will love him and miss him always.
