Charles Russell Schempp, affectionately known as "Skip" to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, at the age of 81. He grew up in Philadelphia and resided there until his death. He was a plumber by trade and worked to help build Lincoln Financial Field and many other buildings in the area. In his spare time, he could be found working on his train display, volunteering at church, or spending time with his family.
Skip was an Eagle Scout and after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, he became a Boy Scout leader. He served on the Property Committee at St. John's Lutheran church, where his passion for service was evident. Skip loved the national parks and was able to visit many of them in his lifetime. Once he retired, he and his wife, Vicki, volunteered together on blood drives for the American Red Cross. He was also involved in Marriage Encounter with Vicki, whom he was married to for over 58 years. Together they had two daughters, Linda Graeff (Tom) and Stefani Toth (Michael). He will be missed by his grandchildren Abigail Graeff (Coty Delaney), Ethan Graeff and Olivia Toth. The recent addition of his great-grandson, Cooper Delaney, brought him great joy. Skip is also survived by his brother, Richard Schempp (Carol). He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Florence Schempp.
Skip's life will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Saint John's Lutheran Church, located at 3101 Tyson Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19149. The Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, followed by his Service at 10:30 am. Skip will be laid to rest in St. John's Memorial Garden. As we reflect on the life of Skip, we remember a man who put God and family first.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations in Skip's name to St. John Lutheran Church, 3101 Tyson Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 19149 or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research Grand Central Station P.O. Box 4777 New York, NY 10163-4777
We invite you to honor Skip's memory by sharing your fondest memories and uploading photos of him on his memorial page. Your stories and pictures will help us celebrate the life of this extraordinary man, who touched so many lives with his kindness and dedication.

Betsy and I are very sorry for your loss. My first contact with "Skip" goes back to 1959 @ Hart Scout Reservation where we both were members of Camp Staff. This continued for several years. Continues contact at reunions and later finding a common interest in "Toy Trains" meeting at our local convention was a real surprise. Scouting friendship and love of family and faith has been the bases for a terrific memory.

Prayers to the Shemp family and Godspeed Skip ! I worked as a helper with skip as a teenager back in the '80s, he was a straight shooter and a good person. May the memory of him bring a smile to your face. Rest easy sir.

I had the pleasure to work with Skip over the years. I cannot express how good of a man he was and a man with tremendous morals.
His skills as a mechanic were top level and I truly enjoyed the time I spent with him.
I am so sorry for your loss.

With sympathy,
