Charles Schmitt Obituary

Charles "Chuck" F. Schmitt, 68, entered into eternal rest on Monday, February 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Dauphin, Pennsylvania.

Born on December 2, 1957, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Alice M. (Hess) Schmitt. Chuck graduated from Bishop McDevitt Catholic High School in 1977 and went on to accomplish many things in his life-always guided by the devotion, strength, and integrity that defined him as a husband, father, and friend.

Family was the very center of Chuck's world. When his sons were young, he was actively involved in their local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts programs, cherishing every moment spent supporting and guiding them. An avid hunter and fisherman, Chuck shared his deep love of the outdoors with his family, and spent 18 years cultivating a home away from home at Pettecote Junction Campground in Cedar Run, Pennsylvania. They created countless treasured memories together through bonfires, tubing, biking, and swimming.

Chuck was compassionate, generous, and full of adventure. He loved riding motorcycles with his sons, filling the air with laughter wherever he went. He had a creative spirit in the kitchen and took great joy in cooking for family and friends, always eager to share a meal and his warm hospitality. Chuck shared his time and resources with others in life and cared deeply about helping those in need. Chuck began his work career building houses and retired from the Pennsylvania Game Commission after 20 years of service – taking care of wildlife and islands on the Susquehanna River. He also shared his love of animals with his family, caring for goats and chickens at their home. Through this, he instilled in his sons a strong sense of responsibility, compassion, and respect for God's creatures. He was known affectionately by his family and happiest as the proud "Keeper of Goats and Chickens".

Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Schmitt; his sons, Brian Schmitt and his wife Amanda, Jonathan Schmitt and his wife Ashley, and Patrick Schmitt and his partner Emma; and his cherished grandchildren, Tim, Tanner, Emily, Gavin, Wyatt, and Vivian, who is expected to enter the world in May. He is also survived by his brother, Robert "Bob" Schmitt and his wife Linda; his sisters, Karen Gavalis and her husband Russel, Claudia Barbush and her husband Robert, Peggy Marks and her husband Ron, and Amy Kozlowski and her husband Joseph; his mother-in-law, Barbara Corrigan; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Holy Name of Jesus Church, with a Funeral Mass beginning at 12:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Chuck's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Chuck's legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to family and friends will live on in the many lives he touched.
