Charles Leslie Sonner

Charles Leslie Sonner, born on March 12, 1931, in Highland County, Ohio, peacefully passed away on June 5, 2024, in Westerville, Ohio, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved son of Ernest and Alice (Shoemaker) Sonner. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ernest Sonner Jr.
Charles, known affectionately as Chuck, is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Nelle (Lemaster) Sonner, his loving daughter Brenda (Terry) Euton, his caring son David (Debbie) Sonner, and his cherished grandchildren Nicholas (Devon) Euton, Ashley (Steven) Petrovich, Taylor Euton, Jessica Sonner, and Melanie Sonner. He also leaves behind his great-grandchildren Lea Euton, Charlee Euton, and Rowan Petrovich, as well as many nieces and nephews who adored him.
Married to the love of his life on September 24, 1954, Charles and Nelle shared a bond that stood the test of time and embodied true partnership and love.
Charles served his country with honor and distinction as a Navy seaman, working as a helicopter mechanic on the USS Leyte CV-32 during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he pursued a successful career as an aviation mechanic, eventually retiring from Champion International after many years of dedicated service.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Charles was known for his skill as a card shark, passion for aviation, golf, puzzles, and most of all, his unwavering love for his grandchildren. He found joy in spending time with his family and sharing his hobbies and interests with them.
A man of integrity and warmth, Charles touched the lives of all who knew him with his kindness and generosity. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be held on June 11, 2024, at 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM, at Rutherford-Corbin Funeral Homes & Crematories located at 515 High Street in Worthington, Ohio. Interment will be immediately after the service at Orange Township Cemetery.
As an alternative to flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
