Mr. Charles W. Strom of Glen Spey, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023 in Liberty, NY. He was 97 years old.
Charles was born April 8, 1926 in Wayne, NJ the son of the late Charles and Ida Strom. He was only 17 years old when he urged his parents to allow him to join the military. His father authorized him to join, and Charles proudly served our country in the United States Navy during WWII. He served on the battleship, U5SS Arkansas. The Arkansas supported the invasion of Normandy, the invasion of Southern France and the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the Pacific, where Charlie watched them raise the flag on Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima. Charles attended and was a Life Member of the Roosa Fleming VFW Post # 161 in Port Jervis, NY. After the war, Charles worked as a truck driver for Al Scaletti in Pompton Lakes, NJ for many years. He was also the owner/operator of Eagle Ambulance in Wayne, NJ for over 15 years. He was an avid collector of antiques. He loved spending time with family.
Charles was predeceased by his first wife, Rose, his companion, Mildred and his son, Charles. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Deborah Strom; grandchildren, Toni Terpstra and her husband Michael, Tammy Evers and her husband Doug, Evan Strom and his wife Neisha and Austin Wildrick; great grandchildren, Elijah, Ayden, Tabitha, Tristen, Mason and Sloane.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Inc., 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY 12771 on Thursday, December 21, 2023 from 2:00pm – 6:00pm. The Panachyda service will be at 4:00pm.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 22, 2023 with a 11:00am Liturgy Mass in St. Volodymyr's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 2104 County Route 41, Glen Spey, NY 12737. Burial will be at Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey, NY. Funeral arrangements are by the GRAY-PARKER FUNERAL HOME, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis.
