Charles B. Suehs (CB, Charlie Boy) passed away November 20, 2024 with his children at his bedside at the age of 80. He was born April 21, 1944 in San Antonio, Texas to Charles Louis Suehs and Virginia "Mutzie" Schwegmann Suehs.
In 1962, Charlie Boy graduated from St. Louis Catholic School in Castroville. He earned a BS in Physics from St. Mary's University. He got the nickname Charlie Boy due to both his father and grandfather also being named Charles. He served in the United States Army for two years at Edwards Air Force Base. During that time, he worked for NASA on the X-15 and the XB70 Valkyrie. After the army, he moved back to San Antonio and then to Castroville. Charlie Boy went back to St. Mary's University to earn his Master's degree. He worked in civil service as a registered licensed professional engineer. He also enjoyed teaching algebra at San Antonio College in the evenings.
He was very active in the Castroville community, and he and his family were part of the Alsatian Dancers of Texas. He was also a past President of the Castroville Chamber of Commerce, participated in the Twinning of Castroville and Ensisheim, and was a member of the Alsatian wine guild "la Confrerie Saint-Etienne". He was a member of the Texas Grape Growers Association, the founding president of the San Antonio Regional Wine Guild, as well as a Certified Wine Judge. He was an entrepreneur of growing his own grapes and made his own wine and beer too. During his frequent travels, he was an ambassador for Castroville by telling everyone about Alsatian heritage. He and his wife Barbara loved to dance and would glide across the dance floor. Although they were living in San Antonio, they were always coming back to Castroville to check in at the bank and have lunch at Castroville Café, which was his grandparents' house.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Alspaugh; children, Charles Steven Suehs and Dr. Carey Meredith Suehs; son-in-law, Dr. Thierry Dominique Boudemaghe; stepchildren, Terry Alspaugh and Melanie Alspaugh; grandchildren, Charles Anthony Suehs, Morgann Rose Metzger-Suehs, Gabrielle Virginia Boudemaghe, Emmanuelle Therese Boudemaghe, and Nathaniel Alspaugh; and brothers, Thomas Suehs and David L. Suehs.
Charlie was preceded in death by his first wife Connye Sue Suehs (Davis), parents, Charles L. Suehs and Virginia "Mutzie" Suehs (Schwegmann) and his brother, John Richard Suehs.
Special thanks to Claudia Hurtado for caring for both of our parents.
