Charles Bell Swigart, "Chick," 79, of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital. A man of profound integrity, kindness, and dedication, Chick touched the lives of many through his professional work, community service, and personal passions.
Born on January 9, 1945, in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, Chick was the son of the late Jane Bell Swigart and John Workman Swigart. He was a lifelong learner and a proud graduate of Juniata College (Class of 1965) and the University of Virginia School of Law (Class of 1968). Chick practiced law privately in Huntingdon for 50 years, building a career marked by excellence, fairness, and compassion.
On June 1, 1964, Chick married the love of his life, Carol (Hamburg) Swigart, in Bel Air, Maryland. Chick met his wife singing in the Juniata College Touring Choir and they have been singing together for over 60 years, in church choirs and, most recently with the Harmony Singers group at Penn National. They recently celebrated 60 wonderful years of marriage. Chick is survived by his devoted wife, Carol; their three children, Carrie Ruth Swigart (Dieter Lindskog) of Woodbridge, CT, Jennifer (Swigart) Newman (Todd Newman) of Fayetteville, PA, and John Christian Swigart (Delia P. Swigart) of McLean, VA; and seven cherished grandchildren: Charlotte G. Lindskog, Emma J. Lindskog, Wesley R. Newman, Shelby J. Newman, Isabella P. Swigart, Evelina P. Swigart, and Luke P. Swigart. He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy (Swigart) Shedd, and his brother, John Workman Swigart, Jr.
Chick was a lifelong member of the Stone Church of the Brethren. He actively participated in all aspects of the church's life including, singing in the church choir, teaching Sunday School, and serving as a Moderator of the Church Board.
Chick was an active member of his community. He served as a Huntingdon Borough Council member, president of the JC Blair Hospital Board, longtime secretary of the Mutual Benefit Board of Directors, solicitor for the Huntingdon County Register and Recorders Office, and a member of the Huntingdon Rotary Club, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow.
An avid gardener, photographer, and tennis enthusiast, Chick's hobbies reflected his zest for life and love for nature. He loved sharing stories from his youth and life with family and friends and new acquaintances alike. His home landscaping efforts in both Huntingdon and Fayetteville left lasting impressions on those around him.
Chick's warmth, humility, and unwavering commitment to his family and community will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
