Charles A. "Chuck" Timko, Ph.D., a man of faith, adventure, and intellect, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024, in
Downers Grove, Illinois, at the age of 88. Born on June 13, 1935, in
Wheeling, West Virginia, Chuck's spirit of independence and hard work defined his life's journey.
A devoted husband, Chuck is survived by his beloved wife, Dolores "Dee" Timko. Together, they built a family founded on giving to others. He was the loving father of Cathy (Bruce) Chisholm, Paul (Karen) Timko, Carrie (Ramon) Santos, and Mark (Nancy) Timko. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Bob, Jim, and John Chisholm; Lauren Wolak, Jeren and Matt Hoffman; Erika Timko; Halina and Julia Santos; Becca and Ally Timko, as well as numerous great-grandchildren who will miss their grandfather's humor and mischief. Chuck was the devoted brother of Jean (Jack) Kloss and Bill (Pam) Timko, and a fond uncle to many nieces and nephews.
With a steadfast desire to improve himself, Chuck graduated from the General Motors Institute before earning his doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University. His passion for learning propelled him to become a Mechanical Engineering Professor at Notre Dame, where he cemented his life-long love of the Fighting Irish. Later, he rose to Vice President of Research at Stone Container Corporation, where he applied his gifts for problem-solving and building up the talents of his team.
Chuck's interests were as vast as his knowledge. Born the son of a coal miner, he soared above his roots to become a skilled glider pilot. An avid adventurist, Chuck's love for the outdoors was evident in his enthusiasm for canoeing, hiking, running and biking, completing two remarkable 500-mile trips.
Deeply rooted in his community, Chuck was a long-term committed member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish in
Darien, Illinois. He served as the first Parish Council President and was a founding member, contributing his voice to the choir at the 8:15 am Mass. His dedication to service extended beyond the church as an original member of the Darien zoning board, a 12-year math tutor at Hinsdale South High School and a volunteer in Hinsdale Hospital's ICU for many years.
Chuck's deep Christian faith was unwavering. A committed member of the Cursillo Movement and several Christian communities, his faith-filled life was an inspiration to many. Described as a force of nature and a math genius, Chuck was a good and loyal friend, always ready to lend a hand. His adventurous spirit, faith-filled life, and intelligence left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
As we bid farewell to Chuck, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a journey marked by love, learning, and the pursuit of adventure. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
