Charles "Charlie" Van Vactor, 78, Flickered Out after a Bright Life
On March 4, 2025, Charlie, a retired electrician and maintenance technician, finally ran out of juice at the ripe age of 78. Known for keeping the lights on-both literally and figuratively-Charlie left this world after a life full of sparks, stories, and just the right amount of mischief.
Charlie spent a few years in the Navy dodging bullets and fixing ships in Vietnam, where he likely honed his knack for telling tales taller than the masts he worked under. After the Navy, he traded his sea legs for a tool belt, becoming the guy you called when your toaster rebelled or your porch light flickered. Retirement didn't slow him down-Charlie still took on the occasional side gig, probably because he couldn't stand to see a loose wire or a wobbly table leg go unpunished.
When he wasn't elbow-deep in someone's breaker box, Charlie could be found rumbling down the road on his motorcycle, wind in his hair and a grin that said, "I've seen worse storms than this." He also enjoyed some good tunes and the occasional adult beverage-whiskey, beer, or whatever the bartender slid his way-always with a story to pair it. His adventures from decades past-some true, some suspiciously embellished, could turn a quiet room into a roaring crowd. Whether it was the one about outsmarting a monsoon with a rusty wrench or that time he swore he taught a parrot to salute, Charlie's yarns were the kind you didn't fact-check because they were too damn entertaining.
He leaves behind family and friends who will dearly miss his knowledge, wit, and kind spirit, a garage full of tools that nobody knows how to use, and a bar tab that's probably still open somewhere. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you raise a glass, tell a wild story, and check your smoke detectors-Charlie would've insisted.
Catch you on the flip side, you old livewire. You've earned your rest.
