Charlie Marthers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by South Carolina Cremation Society - West Columbia on Jun. 20, 2024.
Charlie Hughes Marthers was called home to receive his eternal life on Monday, June 10, 2024. A native of Winnsboro, South Carolina, Charlie resided in West Columbia, where he was well known and loved by his neighbors and community.
Born on February 23, 1947, Charlie, also known by many as "Chuck", "Chas", and "The Mayor of Dacus Lane", was a true character who loved life, family, friends, and doing anything possible to bring joy and a smile to all those that knew him. Charlie was a true outdoorsman, with a sincere love for hunting, fishing, and all the beauty that being present in Nature has to offer. He enjoyed making connections and friends globally through his hobby as a CB and Sideband Radio enthusiast. His appreciation for Country and Bluegrass Music encouraged him to love playing the guitar, banjo, as well as sharing his vocal talents for singing.
On June 16, 2024, Charlie and wife, Cathy Smalley Marthers, would have celebrated 44 years of marriage. Besides his dedicated and loving wife, Charlie is survived by his son, Kevin Scott Marthers of Lexington, stepdaughter, Traci Michele O'Rear of West Columbia, four grandchildren, Hayden Marthers, Gavin Marthers, Aidan O'Rear, and Opal Shull. He is also survived by his Brother, Dennis Marthers (Sherri) of Winnsboro. He was predeceased by his parents, Charlie & Myrtle Marthers, and his sister, JoEllen Mattox.
Charlie retired with over 30 years of service in his career at Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel in Columbia, where he was a Conversion Control Room Chief. A proud patriot for his Country, Charlie was a decorated Vietnam Veteran, where he served in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Rangers, and was honored to be a recipient of the Purple Heart. He greatly enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his fellow members of the Patriot Guard Riders.
The family would like to thank the VA Home Based Primary Care Team for their care and support during this time. The Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, June 25th, 2024 at 3:00 pm at The Edge Church, 3220 Platt Springs Road, West Columbia, SC 29170. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wreath Sponsorship, Patriot Guard Riders or a charity of their choice.
