Charlie Northern Obituary

Charlie F. Northern, 73 of Fowler, passed away September 2, 2025 surrounded by family at IU Health Arnett after a brave and determined battle with cancer. Though his journey ended before he could return back to his home, Charlie’s spirit remained bright and full of hope until the very end.

Charlie was born the son of Jenny Lowry and Charlie Northern and raised with a strong work ethic. He attended Benton Central before following his interest straight into a 45-year career with Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked as a machinist. He loved what he did — not just for the job itself, but for the trains, which fascinated him throughout his life.

Charlie had a knack for technology and could often be found tinkering with gadgets, fixing things others gave up on. Around town, he became a gentle “grandpa figure” to many local kids — always ready with a warm smile and a stash of snacks to share.

Family meant a lot to Charlie. He is survived by siblings, Pamela Kult of Fowler, Lou Villinski of Marion, Mike and Peg Villinski of Kentland; his cherished aunt, Freda Chasteen of Kentland; and beloved uncle, Melvin Hall.

He now reunites with those who passed before him, his parents, brothers, Robert and Ron Northern, and grandparents, Fred and Thelma Hall.

Earlier this year, after complications from dental surgery, led to a difficult diagnosis. Charlie faced cancer with courage and clarity. In July, he underwent surgery to remove the cancer from his jaw — a procedure he approached with quiet strength and a sense of humor, referring to the resulting scar as his “battle scar”. Though he didn’t get the homecoming he hoped for, he never lost his light.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025 from 1 p.m. (EST) until the funeral hour at 3pm (EST) at the funeral home with Rick Gerts officiating. Interment to follow at Fowler Cemetery.

Charlie’s journey may have ended, but his memory rolls on — steady as the trains he loved, and just as full of purpose.
