On August 24, 2025, God, in his infinite wisdom, called home to glory Cherylene Simpson. She was born in Atlantic, Virginia to Barbara Marshall and the late Arthur Wilson White, Jr.
Cherylene grew up on Wisharts Point Road and along with most of the youth in Accomack County, she worked in the fields and graters. In adulthood, her employers included Tyson Foods, formerly known as Holly Farms, and several eateries on Chincoteague Island. Cherylene attended North Accomack Elementary School, Mary N. Smith Middle School, and Atlantic High School. She recently worshipped at New Beginnings United Methodist Church in Wattsville, Virginia. Her pastor, Rev. Harold White, Sr., led her to the Lord just a few short weeks ago...HALLELUJAH!!!
Always keeping her eyes on the tide, her love for crabbing and fishing off the bank was unparalleled. With pant legs rolled up and her crab net in one hand, she would lure her favorite seafood into her waiting basket. She had a passion for cooking, and often looked for a reason to prepare meals to bring family and friends together. Ever the social butterfly, you would often find her in the company of her girlfriends, whom she considered sisters, talking, laughing, and joking, always enjoying each other's company.
As her life unfolded, Cherylene married "the boy down the road," Roger "RT" Scarborough. This union was blessed with two daughters, Carla and Lori. After she and RT separated, Cherylene later met Ivory "Soap" Godwin. From this relationship were born two more daughters, Erica and Ivy. Ever optimistic, she later married Kenny Winslow. Many years later, Cherylene met and married Robert Simpson, enjoying twelve months of love and marriage in Alabama before he passed away. After his passing, she returned to her home on the Eastern Shore.
Cherylene was truly unique and always genuine. Known by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as "Cherwa," she assigned special code names to those closest to her, in particular her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. "Sally, Sammy, Poopie, Juicy, TayTay, Cheese, Toodle Pop, Million Dollar Baby, Nana, Tick, Trixie, Trouble, Miss Ugly, and Victor" were the loves of her life! Through them she lives on.
Our prayer is your last heartbeat was the heartbeat of God. Take your rest in glory. We love you.
Along with her husband, Robert, Cherylene was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Jonnie and Elizabeth Marshall; paternal grandparents, Arthur and Malinda White; uncle, Edward "Jr." Marshall; aunt, Geneva Marshall; and daughter, Lori Scarborough.
Cherylene leaves to cherish her memory: three daughters, Carla (Anthony "TJ") Harris, Erica Scarborough, and Ivy Scarborough; eight grandchildren, Devonté Scarborough, Cortecca Wise, Labria (John) Wright, Aaliyah Harris, Alicia Harris, Alexis Williams, Octavia Williams, and Angel Davis; three great-grandchildren, Loryn Wright, Nalani Scarborough, and Drue Johnson; mother, Barbara Marshall; stepfather, Andrew Dickerson; four brothers, Jeffrey Marshall, Wayne Marshall, Douglas Dickerson, and Alan Dickerson; a sister, Sylvia (Johnny) Dickerson Weathersby; great aunt, Gladys Marshall; aunt and uncles, Carolyn and Jeffrey Jones, John Marshall, and Virginia "Rella" Marshall Doldren.
