Chester R. Gray, 90, of Mount Carmel, Illinois, passed away on Monday, August 4, 2025 at Wabash General Hospital surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on May 28, 1935 in Lawrenceville, Illinois, the son of Harley "Dale" and Bernadine (Downen) Gray. He married Marilyn Sue Mabry on October 23, 1955 and together they enjoyed thirty-five years of marriage until her passing on March 20, 1991.
Chester faithfully served his Country in the United States Army. He was proud of his family, whom he loved dearly. Chester's true passion in life was cars, he especially enjoyed building hot rods and street rods. His love for craftsmanship and creativity was evident in every vehicle he brought to life. Chester was a dedicated and hard worker where he spent forty years as a machinist at Pacific Press & Shear. He will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Chester will be remembered by his two sons, Jeff Gray of Ft. Branch, IN and John Gray and wife, Jeni of Princeton, IN; one daughter, Karen Gray of Evansville, IN; four grandchildren, Brittany (Travis) Martin, Chris (Katie) Gray, Courtney (Kyle) Kerstiens, and Jordan (Christian) Davis; eight great grandchildren; sister, Martha O'Dell of Florida.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn; infant son, Gary Allen Gray; daughter in law, Cindy Gray.
In keeping with Chester's wishes, cremation will take place and no formal services will be held.
