CHRISTINE M. "Chris" EASTBURN (nee Betz), age 78, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024. Devoted wife to the late John "Jay" Eastburn. Loving sister to William D. Betz (Marilyn), Rudolph W. Betz, Jr. (Maryanne), and the late Mary M. Betz and Constance Betz. Beloved aunt to Alexandra Schoenmeier (Kurt), Victoria Hutz (Michael), Rudy Betz III, Keirstin Betz, and the late William D. Betz, Jr. Christine was also predeceased by her parents, the late Rudolph W. and Margaret Betz (nee Schleinkofer).
Chris was the oldest of five children of Rudy and Marge Betz who lived in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. Wanting their children to receive a quality education, they enrolled Chris into Eden Hall, a private school for girls run by the Sacred Heart Nuns. She thrived at Eden Hall while meeting lifelong friends. Upon graduating Eden Hall, Chris went on to Washington, DC, to attend Dunbarton College of the Holy Cross for her freshman and sophomore years. She then transferred to Gwynedd Mercy College, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics. While attending Gwynedd Mercy College, she met, through her brother Billy, the love of her life, Jay Eastburn.
After graduation from college, Chris started her career in July, 1968, at the Frankford Arsenal, working for the US Army. She married Jay in May of 1969. When the government closed the Frankford Arsenal in 1976, they moved to Andover, NJ, where she transferred to the Picatinny Arsenal. In their younger years, Chris and Jay enjoyed snowmobiling in the Adirondack mountains in the Old Forge area of New York. In their later years, they enjoyed traveling to New England States, especially Rockport, Massachusetts, and Nantucket. They planned to retire in New England, but Chris lost Jay to cancer in 1999.
Chris retired from the Arsenal with a 31 year career decorated with achievements and awards. She thoroughly enjoyed her job. Chris moved back home to the family house in the Torresdale section of Philadelphia where she became a member of the Torresdale Frankford Country Club. She loved her time at the club where she mainly played Bridge both for fun and competitively against other clubs in the area. Chris, and her partner Peggy Kaufman, brought home the first bridge championship for Torresdale Country Club.
As she began to wind down, aging gracefully, she was cared for by her family, friends, and neighbors. She will be remembered for her humor, honesty, and intellect. Her wisdom was a guiding light, offering thoughtful advice and a listening ear to those who needed it. Her light will continue to shine through all who were fortunate enough to know her. Christine lived a beautiful life, and her memory will forever be treasured in the hearts of her family and friends
