Christl Schwartz, 87, passed on June 9, 2025, in Mt. Angel, Oregon. Born on August 26, 1937, in Münster, Germany and raised during/after World War II, Christl's life was marked by resilience, devotion to family and faith, and a deep commitment to service.
She married handsome G.I. William Schwartz in Germany and they had 3 sons, but their family was not complete until they adopted their daughter, Lynette, from Korea. Upon moving to the United States with her loving husband and family, Christl built a life rooted in perseverance and purpose. While raising four children on a shoestring budget, she pursued her education with unwavering determination. She earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree by attending school part-time-an achievement that reflected her dedication to personal growth and the value she placed on learning. She became a teacher, assisting Korean immigrants to learn English, and later teaching German at the college level. She left the teaching profession to earn more money for retirement and found herself working at the Kennedy Space Center, in the Firing Room from which they launched the Space Shuttle. There she worked her way up to supervisor before retiring. Christl's compassion extended far beyond her family circle. In Florida, she volunteered for many years as a Guardian Ad Litem, advocating for foster children in legal proceedings. She also served as a hospice volunteer, offering comfort during life's most vulnerable moments. Her love for nature was evident in her passion for flowers and gardening. But reading remained her favorite pastime throughout her life-a quiet joy that brought her peace and inspiration. A devout Roman Catholic and active member of the Mt. Angel Abbey oblate community, Christl lived her faith through action. As a Benedictine Oblate of Mt. Angel Abbey, she contributed meaningfully to the spiritual life of the community. She worked closely with Fr. Augustine translating historical documents from German to English-bridging cultures and preserving important records for future generations. Christl became something of a local fixture at the Benedictine Brewery Taproom. Each afternoon she would walk over to share stories from her
remarkable life with fellow patrons-always greeted with a tiny mug of Black Habit beer in hand. Christl was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William August Schwartz, and her son William "Andy" Schwartz. She is lovingly remembered by her children: son Ronald Schwartz; son Michael Schwartz and his wife Cheryl; daughter Lynette Schwartz; and daughter-in-law Genise Schwartz (Andy's wife). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
