Chris passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Monday, April 21, 2025, at Corewell Health in Farmington Hills, surrounded by those he loved most. He was 57 years old and faced his courageous, seven-year battle with cancer with optimism, strength, and his signature humor and remained smiling and positive every single day. In his final hours, his family ensured he was comfortable and at peace.
Born in 1967, Chris, lovingly known as "Shag" by family and close friends, spent his early school years at St. Mary's Preparatory in Orchard Lake before transferring to Farmington High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1986. Chris was known for his quick wit, kind heart, and unforgettable dimples. His warmth and humor left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A devoted dog lover, Chris shared a deep, inseparable bond with his beloved dogs, especially Chewy-his "baby" and constant companion. He was a passionate fan of sports, especially hockey, baseball, softball, and Detroit Lions football. Sundays in the fall meant cheering on the Lions with friends at Coach's Corner in Livonia-a standing commitment he rarely missed.
Chris enjoyed playing golf and made it a tradition to attend an annual summer outing with close friends. His heart found joy in time spent with family, especially summers at Gull Lake and more recently, at the family cottage in Port Austin. One of his greatest joys came true in July of 2024 when he and Melissa moved onto Alta Loma Drive in downtown Farmington-a dream location for them. They embraced every bit of it: walks with their dogs through Shiawassee Park ("City Park," as he fondly called it), cold beers at Farmington Brewery where Shag was a proud lifetime Mug Member, Friday evening concerts at the Sundquist Pavilion, weekend Farmers' Markets, Memorial Day and Founders' parades, Festival, and the infamous Beer Tent.
Chris had a wonderful bond with his nephews, Chase and Kylar. They shared an uncanny sense of humor and stayed close through their favorite social media content-laughing and connected. He stayed active with regular cardio sessions at LA Fitness in Livonia and Edge Gym in Farmington Hills. An avid sneakerhead, Chris's collection topped 100 pairs, and he always stepped out in style.
He had a special love for the fall season-the crisp air, the vibrant colors, and the peaceful walks through Carpenter Lake Park in Southfield. It was his favorite time of year, in his favorite places, with his favorite companions.
Chris will be remembered for his kindness, his unstoppable humor, his love of life's simple pleasures, and the genuine way he showed up for the people and the community he loved. He brought laughter and light to every room-and leaves behind memories filled with love, loyalty, and joy. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
Chris was preceded in death by his father, Gus, and his brother, Matthew. He is survived by his devoted partner, Melissa Baker; his beloved mother, Judy Berzins; cherished nephews, Chase and Kylar; dear sister-in-law, Bonnie; loving aunt, Patty Burns, as well as a host of friends.
Family and friends may gather at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington on Saturday, April 26th, from 1-5 pm. A memorial ceremony honoring Chris' life will commence at 5 pm.
In lieu of customary remembrances, those who wish to further honor Chris' life are invited to contribute in his name to the Detroit Dog Rescue.

I was new to Farmington High as a senior and Shaggy went out of his way to make me feel welcome. He was a special, gifted and genuine person. One of a kind and will be dearly missed.
