Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holloway Funeral Home - Salisbury on Oct. 31, 2025.
Christopher Thornwell Conyers, Jr., lovingly known as Chris or "Pop" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, in
Salisbury, Maryland, following complications from a stroke. Born on December 8, 1942, at Fort Riley, Kansas, Chris lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to his family, his profession, and his country.
After graduating from The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia, Chris completed his undergraduate studies at Washington and Lee University before earning his medical degree from Emory University and completing his residency at the Medical College of Virginia. His long and rewarding career as a radiologist at Peninsula General Hospital was marked by innovation and care. He was proud to be part of the team that brought groundbreaking technologies such as the CAT scan and the MRI to the Eastern Shore. More than a colleague or mentor, he was deeply committed to the lives and well-being of everyone in his department, always taking time to guide, support, and celebrate their professional and personal growth.
A proud veteran, he served his nation with honor as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, stationed at Camp Zama in Japan, where his exceptional service was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
A competitor at heart, Chris loved the art of a good game - especially chess, bridge, poker, or any contest that challenged the mind. He was always the first to take his seat at the hearts table with his grandchildren. He treasured his home on the river, which he called "the most beautiful spot," and his place at the head of Betty's table, where he often joked, "I don't know what the Queen is eating tonight, but I wouldn't trade places." Music was a defining thread and constant companion throughout his life. He particularly enjoyed jazz, blues, and the iconic sounds of the 1960s. A savvy investor, Chris also took pleasure in following the stock market, applying the same strategic thinking he enjoyed in games and puzzles to his financial pursuits.
Christopher Thornwell Conyers, Jr. will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose counsel and generosity served as a model for a life well lived. Family and friends were his greatest pride. The ultimate advocate, he spoke his words of encouragement freely and often. Chris's memory will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his influence will be felt for generations.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday afternoon, November 22, 2025, at Green Hill Country Club. More details will follow.
Chris is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Booth Conyers, with whom he shared 57 years full of love and good fortune; their three children, Christopher Thornwell Conyers III (Kimberly), Anna Conyers Wood (Zach), and Carter Booth Conyers (Annette); eight grandchildren, Graham Anthony Wood, Christopher Thornwell Conyers IV, Tyler Wyatte Conyers, Owen Carter Wood, Abbey Jayne Conyers, Chelsea Frances Wood, Marley Anne Conyers, and Carter Michael Conyers; his sister-in-law, Katherine "Kay" Dorman Conyers; his nephews, James "Jimmy" Reid Conyers, Jr. and Walter "Wally" Dorman Conyers; his niece, Mary Doty Conyers Lyness; and their children.
