Ann Stenberg Obituary
Ann Campbell Stenberg of Norfolk, Va., died October 16, 2025, at the age of 73. She was the daughter of the late Col. Francis Wilson Campbell (USAF) and Muriel Slattery Campbell of Severna Park, Md. Ann graduated from Severna Park High School and the University of Maryland College Park before earning MS and PhD degrees in microbiology from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. She completed postdoctoral training in microbiology and immunology at the Penn State College of Medicine.
Ann was a member of the faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School from 1982 until her retirement as a tenured professor in 2018. She was the principal investigator of a research laboratory for 28 years and served on numerous national grant review panels and editorial boards. She received 12 institutional or state awards for teaching or service and was elected to the AOA and Gold Humanism Honor Societies.
In her last 7 years at EVMS, she served as Associate Dean for Student Affairs, working with future health care providers to promote their professional development. In retirement, Ann continued to mentor through her work with the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast as a board member and Gold Award and scholarship committee member.
Ann is survived by her husband of 36 years and best friend in life, Richard Michael Stenberg of Norfolk, Va., and her pride and joy, son Matthew Francis Stenberg of Quincy, Mass.
She is also survived by her brother William Campbell (Maryanne Vollers) of Montana. Ann's sister Jane Simmons (Donald) and their children Amber Kleckner (Ian), David Simmons, and Eric Simmons reside in Maryland, along with great nephew and niece Leif and Jaina Kleckner. Ann was preceded in death by husband Paul Crawford Dunn, Jr., MD.
Members of the Stenberg family who survive Ann are sisters-in-law Rebecca Fisher (John) of Georgia and Donnetta Stenberg (Chris Mussomeli) of Pennsylvania and their children and grandchildren: Jeremiah (Jessie) Stenberg and daughters Millie and Hayley of Tennessee, Elizabeth Fisher of Wyoming, and John Fisher Jr of New York. She was preceded in death by brother-in-law Jon Stenberg of Pennsylvania.
Together with family and friends, Ann enjoyed traveling, fly fishing, the beach, skiing, yoga, and engaging in nature at the farm and in the Rocky Mountains.
A celebration of Ann's life will be held Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Kaufman Theater of the Chrysler Museum of Art, One Memorial Place, Norfolk, Va.
