Christopher Cotton Obituary
Christopher James "Chris" Cotton, born on January 5, 1985, in Boston, Massachusetts, passed away suddenly on December 1, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 40. Chris was a beloved son, nephew, cousin, and friend whose warm spirit touched all who knew him.
Chris spent his formative years in Killingworth, Connecticut. He attended Xavier Catholic High School in Middletown, Connecticut. During his time at Xavier, he excelled not only in academics but also in the arts, participating in theatrical productions alongside students from the neighboring Mercy High School. His passion for performance and creativity were evident to all who saw him on stage. He also had a compassionate heart for those in need, actively participating in MYARC, a national organization supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and attending every meeting with unwavering dedication.
A dedicated and accomplished member of the Boy Scouts of America, Chris began his journey as a Tiger Cub and proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout in high school. His commitment to service and leadership was exemplified by his significant contributions, including a second Eagle project focused on the respectful retirement of worn and tattered flags. This project gained recognition in the local New England paper, a testament to his community spirit and dedication.
Chris pursued higher education at Providence College in Rhode Island, where he earned his Bachelor's degree. While there, he also found the time to contribute to his community and fellow students by manning the computer help desk and playing DJ at the local radio station. He continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where he completed his Master's degree in Computer Science. His career as a software engineer was marked by his work as a contractor for the federal government, where he applied his talents with diligence and integrity, and received many awards and accolades from the Department of Homeland Security.
Outside of his professional life, Chris was an avid football enthusiast, with a particular allegiance to his beloved New England Patriots. He also enjoyed gardening and was very patriotic, showing his love of country by actively participating in the Wreaths Across America for many years. He also contributed to his community by volunteering with many causes, including helping to build a bandstand for musicians to play as meals were served to those in need in the local area.
Chris is survived by his loving parents, Donald Joseph and Deborah Pile Cotton; his dear aunt, Mary MacDonald; his uncle Walter Pile and his wife, Jan; and cousins Morgan Biglia (Paul-Louis) and Andrew Pile (Kate Heffernan). His family and friends will forever cherish the memories of his kindness, humor, and generosity.
Visitation for Chris will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 6-8 PM at Wilmington Funeral Chapel, located at 1535 S. 41st Street, Wilmington, NC 28403. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in his honor on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 9 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 6650 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington, NC 28412. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, NC.
Chris Cotton's legacy of love, laughter, and service to others will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace.
