LOWVILLE - Christopher W. Kunert, 54, died early Sunday morning, February 9, 2025 at Lewis County General Hospital with his wife Lori by his side.
Chris was born on February 18, 1970 in Shelby, OH, the son of William and Heike (Seibert) Kunert. He graduated from Centennial High School in Columbus, OH, and enlisted in the U.S. Army right after graduation. He started his 23 year career with the military. Chris was with the 314th Infantry at Ft. Drum. He then served in the 325th Airborne in Vicenza Italy, and then 187 Infantry at Fort Drum. After briefly leaving service, Chris decided to re-enlist and served with 431st at Ft. Drum. Chris was a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was honorably discharged in 2011 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. A few of his decorations, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Commendation Medal, (3rd Award), Overseas Service Ribbon, Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, and Parachutist Badge.
Chris and Lori were married in their backyard on July 9, 2016, their favorite place, besides the ocean.
He is survived by his wife, Lori Lynn, his three children, Victoria (Dylan) Carroza of Albany; Gregory (Josephine) Kunert, and their children, Ryn, Gabriel, and Alita of Columbus, SC; Cassandra (Iskandar Haggarty) Kunert of Germantown, MD; Lori's two sons, Zachary Brooks and Nicholas Brooks both of Lowville; his father, William (Elaine) Kunert of Lexington, KY; his mother, Heike (Ralph) Sperling of Augusta, SC and the mother of his children, Prudence Greene of Copenhagen, NY.
Chris is predeceased by his brother, Gregory Kunert in 1993.
Chris was past Commander of Lewis County Memorial Post #6912, V.F.W. and a member of Lowville American Legion Post #162. He enjoyed a glass of whiskey, a good cigar, and sitting by the fire with his dogs. When he was younger enjoyed hunting and golfing, most recently he enjoyed camping at Whetstone.
He thought of himself as the grill master and his smoker with all of his elaborate wood chips and rubs. In the summertime there was not a time Chris and Lori were not outback, in the pool, or hanging on the deck singing, and dancing to their favorite songs. Chris loved it so much he bought a larger karaoke machine so he could continue to sing and dance inside. He was so full of life and was the life of the party! He was so proud of the way he always kept the pool looking like a sheet of glass.
Chris and Lori use to bowl a lot too, in the beginning before his shoulder wouldn't allow him. Chris enjoyed the traditional Friday and Sunday night ritual with Lori and the boys with usually a handful of the boys friends gathering with his homemade taco popcorn and watching Grim and the Walking Dead.
There will be no calling hours. A military graveside service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
Christopher always favored Tunnel To Towers for disabled veterans, their families, and everything they stand for. Memorials may be made to: Tunnel To Towers Foundation, https://t2t.org/donate/
