Christopher Palumbo, Sr. of Florham Park, NJ passed away on Friday, March 29, 2024 at the age of 67 in the home he shared with his loving wife of forty-four years. Chris was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.
The son of the late Ralph Palumbo, Jr. and the late Mary Mattscheck, Chris grew up in Millburn, New Jersey where he met his high school sweetheart and future wife, Elizabeth. He developed a passion for cars from the time he was young, helping at his father's car repair station and fixing cars with his friends. Christopher graduated from Millburn High School in 1975 and completed his associates degree in automotive repair at Williamsport Area Community College (now Pennsylvania College of Technology). He began his career in automotives working as a research technician in the test car lab at Exxon Research before following in his father's footsteps and starting his own automotive repair business in 1984. Chris opened his repair shop, New Palumbo's Inc. at the same location as his father's former business on Main Street in Millburn, New Jersey. Through his work, Chris made many close friends and helped those in the surrounding community. During his spare time, Chris enjoyed racing cars, spending time with his grandchildren, and sitting on the porch at his house in Long Beach Island watching the sunset with his wife.
Christopher Palumbo, Sr. is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Palumbo (née Horn) and children Christopher, Jr. (Jennifer), Stacy (Kenneth), and Andrew (Laura). He was a loving grandfather and "Best Buddy" to five grandchildren Landon, Olivia, Tyler, Caroline, and Abbyrose. Christopher is survived by his siblings Gary, Nina, Ralph, and Carla as well as his many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Monday, April 1, 2024 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial, 7 Summit Ave, Summit, NJ. I just learned of Chris's passing.

I met him in the early 90's when he still sold Exxon gas, and knew I had found someone extra special. He had taken the greatest care of my six different cars since then. During that time I often walked by his station to get to my office and took his daily greeting for granted. I will miss his ready smile, sense of humor, honesty, mechanical skills, and, most of all, sincere and deep humanity. I have been lucky to have known Chris.

I wish I knew Chris in his personal life but I can only speak to him in his professional one. That man knew his way around a car like nobody´s business. He knew me by my 2001 Mercedes SLK and the CLA 45 AMG. Both of which I told him how I wrecked them against a curb. I called him about the second wreck and he said "yup that´s a good one!" This is the last time I spoke to him. He was very good at what he did. Very honest man and led a great company everyone in the community could trust.

Best,
David Niles jr.

Chris Palumbo will remain the best mechanic I’ve ever met and one of the most fantastic humans in NJ. I’ll never forget his sense of humor and dry but warm responses. I once recorded a ‘noise’ our car was making and then I performed the noise for him at the shop. He cracked up over that. He also took care of our 20-year-old Nissan Altima when we moved here to the ‘burbs. We told him to tell us when it was done. One year he said, ‘you might want to think about a second car.’ About a year later, he said : ‘drive it home. And don’t drive it anymore’. He warned us !! lol. We laughed and laughed. He treated us like family. Like we were his daughters. Or his sisters. We can’t believe he’s gone. What a lovely, lovely guy - he’s what I would call a real Mensch. Chris, you will be so much missed by your community, in addition to your family and friends.

My wife and I just found out Chris passed away. We are so saddened by this news. We first met Chris when our battery died on the way to closing on our new home in 2016. Our realtor phoned Chris and he helped us out right away. From that day on, Chris became "our guy". Regardless of the hour of the day or how busy the shop was, Chris was always so nice and kind and always had a smile for us. We will miss him! Heartfelt condolences to his entire family.

My heartfelt condolences to Beth and Chris's family on your loss. I met Chris in the late 1970's when we both worked at Exxon as technician auto mechanics and developed a lasting friendship. What I remember most about Chris was his continual smile, honesty, trustworthiness and being very skilled in auto mechanics. He accomplishment very much in building a very successful auto repair business. Even though years would pass between our conversations, we would quickly catch up talking about our families. God bless you Chris, you will surely be missed and I will never forget our times together and friendship.

I´m very saddened to hear about Chris´s passing. I knew him as a loyal customer of New Palumbo´s, where Chris distinguished himself as a delightful person and a great mechanic, always conscientious and trustworthy. A real loss for our Millburn community. My condolences to Chris´s family and friends. -Larry Greenberg

The Palumbos were great neighbors living down the street from us when we were all growing up. Lovely family. I remember Chris & Beth dating in school & so happy they had a long wonderful marriage full of kids & grandkids. I know he'll be missed by many.

I first meet Chris when he started at Exxon. All the guys immediately liked him. When he left to open the gas station being a hard worker with a great personality we all knew he would do well. I always kept in touch with Chris. He is truly one of the nicest people I have ever know. It breaks my heart to know he is gone. He will be immortal in his children and grand children. I will never forget Chris. Rest in peace my friend.

No matter how hectic things were at the garage we always knew we would be welcomed by Chris with the warmest welcome and big smile on his face. What a prince of a guy. A ray of sunshine. While we didn't know him outside of his workplace, we and all who were lucky enough to know him will miss him. Rest in peace.

I have been friends with Chris since the 80´s driving trucks at Forked River. Then though the Millburn fire Department then through Dobbs Auto Body. He has always been a great friend. I will miss my stop in to talk with him. I do know the world is now missing the best ever car valet. Rest in peace
