Claire Lanphear Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of Chittenden County on Jan. 19, 2026.
Claire L. Lanphear, 84, of Williston, VT passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2026, watching her beloved Boston Bruins.

Claire was born on June 28, 1941, in Springfield, VT, daughter of Romeo and Helena Morin Lataille. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Claremont, NH. Claire earned a degree in Elementary Education from Keene State College in 1963. She further pursued her education earning a Master of Education in Technology from Lesley University in 1999.

She was married to Wilson E. Lanphear on July 4, 1964. Born and raised in New England, Claire and Wilson spent time in Virginia Beach, VA before settling in East Falmouth, MA, where Claire called home. Claire taught second grade for many years in the Falmouth and Mashpee School systems, where she formed life-long friendships with her co-workers. In her retirement, she enjoyed quilting, attending the theatre at Highfield Hall, reading books by the ocean, and having lunch with friends.

Claire was a strong, independent woman who faced adversity with courage, optimism and a sense of humor. She spent the last chapter of her life in Vermont where she could be closer to family. Although sad to leave her friends (and the ocean), her family and her new community at "The Williston Place" were grateful for her decision.

She is survived by her sons Brian of Huntington, VT, Kevin (Heather) of Woodbury, VT and daughter Kathleen (Patrick) of Danville, VT, and her four grandchildren, Justin, Mac, Eliza and Charlotte. She was predeceased by her mother Helena (1985), husband Wilson (2001), brother Robert (2007) and father Romeo (2016).

A private burial at St. Mary's Cemetery in Claremont, NH and a remembrance of life in East Falmouth, MA will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of the Cremation Society of Chittenden County, a division of Ready Funeral & Cremation Services.

Claire will be so missed . She was a legend as a Mashpee educator. She was the "strict" 2nd grade teacher, while I was in the classroom nearby with one of her dear friends. I´ll always remember that she sure kept those students on their toes!

I came to know the real Claire years later as Kathleen´s mom, and then as a colleague in the Mashpee schools. I always enjoyed our conversations in her kitchen. She loved to talk about education, how she enjoyed life and friends in retirement, but mostly how proud she was of her family. Claire´s bright smile, her laughter and kindness will always be remembered.

My condolences to your family.

So sad to hear of Claire´s passing. I first met Claire while working at Kenneth C Coombs School in Mashpee. She ran her classroom with confidence! Later, Claire and I were in the same graduate program at Lesley University. We had so many laughs together-we pulled each other through the program with determination. She always spoke fondly of her children, sharing stories about them. I was fortunate to call Claire my friend. I hope the many memories comfort everyone.
