Clara David

Clara Marie David, age 89, of Mt. Vernon, IN passed away January 20, 2026 at Deaconess Midtown in Evansville. She was born July 12, 1936 in Evansville, IN to the late, Robert and Julia (Rollett) Nurrenbern.

Clara was a graduate of Mater Dei High School, Class of 1954, and dedicated over 30 years of service as a part-time secretary. She was a very active member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, where she participated in Ladies Fellowship and the St. Matthew Ladies Club Quilters, and served on both the St. Matthew School Board and Parish Council. Clara received the Brute Award in recognition of her service.

In 1957, she became a charter member of the Domestic Doers Extension Homemakers Club, where she held several leadership positions and was honored as Outstanding Homemaker of the Year in 2010. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #5 and VFW Post #1114.

Clara and her family were deeply involved in 4-H. She served for six years on the Posey County Extension Board and was a member of PCARET, attending meetings with state legislators to present goals of Extension education. Clara was an enthusiastic and effective leader wherever she volunteered and served.

She enjoyed playing cards, reading, quilting, walking, and refinishing oak furniture. Clara dearly loved her family, including her nieces and nephews. She was the last living Steinkamp and Nurrenbern descendant born and raised on the original land grant from the government in 1836, land that is now part of the University of Southern Indiana. Clara was deeply proud of her heritage.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" David; sons, Mark, Rick, Rob and Jon David; sisters, Helen Hisch and Margaret "Sis" Meinschein; brothers, Walt, Elmer and Ed Nurrenbern.

Clara is survived by her grandchildren, Cody David (Janelle), Jill Wilson (Nick), Ross David (Emily), Cade Spivey and Oryn David; great-grandchildren, Joslyn, Jensyn, Josie, Casper, Granger, Rhett, Bailey, Heidi, Chance and Alexa; daughter-in-law, Mary David; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of extended family.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 421 Mulberry St., Mt. Vernon, IN with Fr. Darnis officiating and a private burial to follow in St. Matthew Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main St., Mt. Vernon, IN and from 9:00 am until 10:00 am Mass time on Wednesday at the church.
