Clarence Edwin Freeh, lovingly known as "Eddie," passed away at home in Trappe, MD on December 25, 2024, at the age of 78, with his devoted wife, Janet, by his side. Eddie lived a life defined by kindness, generosity, and dedication to his family and community.
Eddie grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where his childhood was marked by challenges that shaped his resilience and character. Despite a modest upbringing and periods of separation from his four siblings, he formed deep connections with those close to him. Always altruistic, Eddie stood up for those in need. He unconditionally loved, lost, and found strength in his faith during his early years. After graduating from Easton High School in 1964, Eddie enlisted in the U.S. Army. His exceptional aptitude led to his assignment in Erlangen, Germany, as part of the elite Davy Crockett Weapons System squad within the Atomic Battle Group. His role in this highly skilled unit reflected his mathematical talent and commitment during his pivotal time. During his years of service, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and received several commendations, including the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Sharpshooter Medal.
After returning from the Army in 1967, Eddie built a life defined by hard work and dedication. Eddie pursued various careers before discovering his true calling as a waterman on Maryland's Eastern Shore. For over 40 years, he worked tirelessly on the Choptank River and its tributaries, fostering a deep respect for its resources while providing for his family and forging lifelong friendships. Eddie's love for the Eastern Shore was evident in countless family gatherings featuring hard-shell crabs and oyster stew. In 2002, he transitioned into real estate, where his intelligence, honesty, and integrity earned him lasting respect and camaraderie.
A skilled problem solver, Eddie could fix, build, and figure out a solution to just about anything. He had a way of brightening everyone's day with his dry humor and encouragement. He was a dedicated husband to Janet for 44 years, and a proud father to Stephen (Donna), Russell (Kelly), and Emily (Matthew). He took great joy in teaching his children fulfilling skills including boating, fishing, home maintenance, money management, and not to take things too seriously. A role model for his children, Eddie emanated empathy, acceptance, and unconditional love. Eddie was also an endearing grandfather that cherished time spent with his seven grandchildren - enjoying time on the Shore, cheering them on at sporting events and sharing laughter through card games, storytelling, and playful jokes. His faithful dog, Teddie, was always by his side.
Eddie will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and ability to bring a smile to all. He was a hardworking provider, a loyal friend, a loving father and grandfather, a supportive husband, and a true gentleman.
A celebration of Eddie's life will be held on February 1, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Trappe United Methodist Church in Trappe, Maryland. May his memory bring comfort and legacy live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
